~ PART 3 ~

Welcome to the third and final part of the 2009 Futuregamez.net Awards where we pick the big ones; the best graphics and sound in PSP and PS3 games and then, finally the Best Overall Game of 2009. If you missed Part 1 or Part 2 of the awards where the best of 2009 including best developers, peripheral and games in each genre were awarded then I would suggest you go there to check out the other winners first. If you've checked them out then read on...

Note: Sadly, due to the lack of releases since early 2008, we have decided to drop the Best Graphics and Best Sound for PS2 from consideration.

Best Sound in a PSP Game
Winner: Patapon 2 (Pyramid)
This will probably be a bit of a contraversial choice, but I have to pick a game, and this is it. Why? Well this game uses the music not as a background effect to complement the action, but is actually integral to the gameplay as you play to the beats of the music. This title, which really struggled at retail, is a little gem and worth a look.
Runners Up: Dissidia: Final Fantasy (Square-Enix), Motorstorm: Arctic Edge (BigBig Studios).

Best Graphics in a PSP Game
Winner: Gran Turismo PSP (Polyphony Digital)
I'll sum this up here. This is the award for best visuals in a PSP game for which there is no comparison to Gran Turismo on PSP which has some of the most detailed car models, brilliant tracks and runs at a super slick 60fps. This is not an award for gameplay and game modes which weren't anywhere near up to scratch. If you want a game to visually impress then this will do the job rather well indeed.
Runners Up: Resistance Retribution (Sony Bend), LittleBigPlanet (Media Molecule).

Best Sound in a PS3 Game
Winner: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Naughty Dog)
Console audio ability is almost limitless these days with the capacity for lossless audio with up to 7.1 surround sound. Indeed this game comes with options for Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, Linear PCM 5.1 and even Linear PCM 7.1 which would count for nothing if the actual audio quality didn't match bit it does with some wonderful effect, great use of surround sound channels and sub-woofer. One thing that really takes the cake though is the dialogue which is witty, well-scripted and perfectly delivered. As good as any Hollywood production.
Runners Up: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Infinity Ward), Killzone 2 (Guerilla Games).

Best Graphics in a PS3 Game
Winner: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Naughty Dog)
Just because this game won the award for "Best New Technology or Game Engine" doesn't mean it has the best visuals, but this year it does. So there might be games with a higher resolution, or perhaps a bit better world destruction, but in this case Naughty Dog have provided the complete package with brilliant modelling of the characters, enemies and game world, brilliant visual effects and a smooth frame rate. The most impressive aspect though are the cut-scenes which are superbly motion captured, and as good as we have ever seen. The PS3 is now truly showing off its power, and what a 50GB Blu-Ray disc can provide. In our review this was the first game to ever receive 100% for graphics, a score we still stand by today.
Runners Up: Killzone 2 (Guerilla Games), Batman: Arkham Asylum (Rocksteady Studios).

WINNER: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Developer: Naughty Dog
Publisher: Sony
Distributer: Sony
Release Date: 15/10/2009

2009 was the year that the Playstation 3 really pulled ahead in terms of technology and showing off the benefits of the system for those willing to put in the hard work. There were several brilliant titles this year including Killzone 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Batman: Arkham Asylum but Naughty Dog's efforts with Nathan Drake's second outing stands above all others without doubt.

As we all know the first game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was a brilliant title that truly showed off the PS3's potential. This sequel though provides so much more with a bigger game, better visuals and tighter gameplay. The relationship between Nathan, Chloe and Elena is brilliantly entertaining too. But this isn't just single player this time with the developers putting in an extensive online multiplayer experience, including several very entertaining co-op missions. As you have seen from the number of awards and runner-up positions given to this game in various categories Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is not only the best game of 2009, but one of the greatest games of all time.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a worthy winner of the 2009 Futuregamez Game of the Year.

Runners Up: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3, Infinity Ward), Killzone 2 (PS3, Guerrilla Games), Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3, Rocksteady Studios), Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (PSP, Rockstar North), Resistance Retribution (PSP, Sony Bend), Assassin's Creed II (PS3, Ubisoft Montreal), Patapon 2 (PSP, Pyramid).
