Hitting a timed lap...
While Sony's Gran Turismo series is regarded by many as the pinnacle of racing games there are those, ourselves included, that want more. We want damage to the cars, and perhaps more importantly we want races to be based on real-life series' such as the Australian Supercars. In recent years Codemasters have met our wishes with the V8 Supercars series (which is known as TOCA Race Driver in Europe and America). V8 Supercars 3 Full Throttle is the PSP version of the hit PS2 game we reviewed here.

Textures could be a bit sharper.
V8 SUpercars 3 Full Throttle includes a wide range of events from around the globe. These include the British GP, the heavyweight touring cars of Australia's V8 Supercars and Germany's DTM events, the American Race series and a global Masters championship tier where you'll compete against the best of the best.

In the World Challenge players take part in mission-based challenges, carrying from winning short races, following a racing line precisely, performing drifts and powerslides, and many more tests of driver skill and courage.

The PSP game includes full damage.
Each World Challenge tier is designed to enhance and expand your race driving skills and experience. First, a series of tests and events will build your racing prowess in areas such as damage control, using the racing line, manoeuvring, timely pit stops and braking accuracy. Now you're ready for the main event: the tier's specialist Championship season with a series of closely-fought multiple car races on different circuits. Come first overall in the championship and you'll move up to compete in the next tier of the World Challenge.

Formula 3 is also included
In addition to the World Challenge, V8 Supercars 3 Full Throttle will come loaded with additional play modes including Free Race and Time Trial. There's also wireless WLAN multiplayer action play for up to a staggering 12 players simultaneously and further multiplayer action via Game Share, enabling up to four players to enjoy fantastic WLAN racing from just one UMD. We have to say we're pretty impressed by Codemasters' efforts in this area.

Expect to play this in December.
Technically the game looks pretty polished. The detail level isn't as high as the PS2 games, however the game still includes the full damage modeling for the cars. V8 Supercars 3: Full Throttle not only includes damage but also sees sparks flying when you bottom out the car, smoke from the tyres, doors flapping after collisions and windscreens shattering.

With a release date recently delayed from just before Christmas until February 2007 we can only hope that Codemasters and Atari are putting all their efforts into making this a worthwhile port. It looks pretty good, and has plenty of options. If it can match the previous PSP game in the series, and add some more features then this will be a game well worth checking out.
