Targeting the destroyer.
I'll admit it, I'm a Trekkie. So much so that I have photos signed by the entire cast of the Original series (including the late James Doohan and DeForest Kelley). To hear that Ubisoft were going to bring Bethesda's new Star Trek titles (there's also a different PC game, and a different PS2 title) to Australia was great news. Star Trek Tactical Assault looks surprisingly good for a handheld based game.

In Star Trek Tactical Assault is a real-time spaceship combat game set during the era of The Original Series. The game allows gameplay for 1 or 2 players, and features a wide array of authentic Star Trek races, ships, and weaponry from the universe of the original Star Trek series.

Plenty more info to digest.
In Star Trek Tactical Assault you play through either Federation or Klingon campaigns in single-player mode or go head-to-head against a friend in wireless multiplayer action. The game takes many cues from the films from the Original series with Captain Kirk in command, and the Klingons still the bad guys. The missions themselves are branching and include multiple outcomes depending on your actions through the battles.

Looking up ship stats.

In Skirmish and Multiplayer modes gamers can command ships from five different races including the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Gorn, and Orion fleets. Each fleet has its own combat philosophy, strengths, and weaknesses. Tactics that lead to victory for one race will result in disaster for another. The multi-player mode will of course take place over the PSP's wireless networking abilities. As yet we're unsure if the game will support Infrastructure gameplay as well as Ad-Hoc, but we suspect not.

The ship is a little battle scarred.
Technically this game looks polished enough. It's not exactly the hardest thing to render some space with a couple of spaceships flying around, put in a few explosions and make it look nice, so I don't expect too many disappointments here.

If your're a Star Trek fan then Star Trek Tactical Assault looks like a great game to sink your teeth into. It's nice to see the PSP getting some more original content (Well OK, the game is headed to DS too). Expect a release in early December through Ubisoft.
