Shrek the Third - PSP Preview
What do you get when you make a CG movie with a green ogre? How about a $US484 million worldwide box office? What happens when you make a second movie? You get a further astonishing $US920 million at the box office. With this third movie certain to make mega-bucks when it opens this weekend in America (with Australia seeing a release on June 7th) it was a certainty that a videogame tie-in would be released. As with previous Shrek titles Activision have the rights to make the game and it is due to hit the shelves in early June to coincide with the movies release.

The story in Shrek the Third sounds pretty entertaining to say the least. When Shrek married Fiona, the last thing he had in mind was becoming the next King. But when Shrek’s father-in-law, King Harold, suddenly dies, that is exactly what he faces. With the help of his trusted companions, Donkey and Puss in Boots, Shrek must find a suitable King for Far Far Away or be stuck with the job himself. The the most "promising" candidate, Fiona’s cousin Arthur—an underachieving medieval high school slacker—proves to be more of a challenge than they bargained for.
Shrek the Third is split up into two main game modes. The Story mode, which allows you to play through many of the events in the movie, will be the bulk of your single player experience while a multi-player mode is also included so you can battle in a game called "Castle Capture". In this multi-player mode your task is to destroy your opponent's castle using catapaults before they destroy yours. During the game you will be able to play as many characters from the movie including Shrek, Donkey, Puss-in-Boots, Fiona, Fiona’s rebellious cousin Arthur and her fellow fairy tale heroine Sleeping Beauty.

Shrek the Third also allows you to spend money earned in the game in a "Gift Shop". In here you can purchase new costumes, bonus difficulty modes and other goodies.
Sadly in terms of the audio the main actors of the movie (Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz) etc have not provided their voices to the game with other voice actors standing in their place. The only exception to this is the wonderful John Cleese who has not only provided voiceovers as King Harold, but also acts as the narrator for the game.

So we honestly don't know too much about Shrek the Third at all as yet. The screenshots released are limited, but fairly early in development so we expect there to be quite a bit more on screen in the final game. Activision's previous Shrek titles have been quite a bit of fun and with the lengthy lead time between the movie starting production, and final release this month we would expect that Activisions, or at least PSP version developers Amaze Entertainment, have taken as much on board as possible and produced a polished game. We'll find out in a couple of weeks.
