Effects such as explosions rock!
When it comes to Sony franchises one that has exploded onto the scene in recent years is their "potential Halo killer" Killzone. Unfortunately while good, the PS2 game never lived up to those lofty expectations. That doesn't mean the franchise, which is still only one game old, doesn't have a following and there are two things that have kept it near the top of gamers most wanted lists. The first is a stunning, albeit pre-rendered, video of a PS3 version shown at E3 2005 (and previewed here), and this game, Killzone Liberation This is an all-new PSP action game which looks like pushing the system like few other games - and continuing the story set up in the PS2 title.

Battles are going to be frantic.
The story takes place approximately two months following the conclusion of events in the first Killzone, with the battle against the Helghast still raging on. In Southern Vekta, the rules of war have been cast aside with the Helghast General, Metrac, employing brutal measures in order to seize the initiative. Returning as Templar, your mission is to undertake a covert operation to save hostages captured by Metrac …whilst ISA troops continue the fight for liberty...

Having being built from the ground up Killzone Liberation isn't a First Person Shooter, but something a little different with the game played from a top-down perspective. The game takes place over 16 missions but as well as reprising your role of Templar you will be able to use a new Tactical Command System to give orders to an AI buddy during frantic firefights. One big feature of this game is the ability to drive vehicles including tanks and hovercrafts to help defeat the enemy.

Plenty of on-screen options.
In terms of weapons players will have access to your typical range, but also sniper rifles and a crossbow with explosive tipped arrows. New enemies to the Killzone universe include bodyguards (complete with riot shield defence) and trained killer dogs.

One of the best features with this game is the multi-player. Sony are including support for up to 6-players via Wi-Fi Ad Hoc mode, but will also allow you to play the game online. These battles should be intense - let's just hope there's no lag. The developers are also promising that you'll be able to play through the main story mode with a friend in a co-op game mode. Finally Sony are also promising some downloadable content for the game - the details of which will be unveiled later.

That's going to take some beating!
The screenshots around this preview should give you a pretty good idea about how this game will look. It's spectacluar running too as character move around, explosions go off in all directions, parts of the landscape are destroyed and bodies and blood fly all over the place.

Christmas 2006 should be a big one for the PSP with a decent amount of original, and technically brilliant, games available. Killzone Liberation looks like leading the pack with some great gameplay, fantastic production values and a numerous features to keep you entertained. Expect the game to hit the shelves in November.
