Saints Row IV: Re-Elected + Gat Out Of Hell - PS4 Preview
Volition (Original) High Voltage (PS4)
PS4 Saints Row IV comes with Gat Out Of Hell for free.
To say that we loved the Saints Row franchise would be a bit of an understatement. While it's technically not as polished as Rockstar's GTA franchise, we always found Volition's title to have more humour and mission variety. Sure, it's often low-brow but always entertaining as are the characters, and the very over the top scenarios. As you would be aware Saints Row IV was released on PS3 in late 2013, but now the game is coming to PS4 with plenty of additions and enhancements.
In Saints Row IV, the head honcho of the Saints has been elected to the Presidency of the United States. But the Saints are just getting started. Now the larger-than-life insanity of the Saints series gets a new twist with a catastrophic alien invasion, and the aliens have transported the Saints to a bizarro-Steelport simulation. Wield gargantuan superpowers and fight to free humanity from alien granddaddy Zinyak’s mental grasp. Escape the simulation that’s trapped the Saints crew, or die trying.
Saints Row is an open-world GTA styled game, just a lot more crazy!
The third person action adventure game is indeed every bit as whacky as it sounds, and is has plenty of humour throughout too. With this fourth title in the franchise taking place in a virtual environment it allows the characters to be upgraded with insane weaponry and abilities. It not all about a GTA styled experience though as the game includes 2D side-scrolling levels, the opportunity to save Santa and, well, pretty much have sex with anyone on your team - often with hilarious results! For plenty more details about the main game check out our PS3 Preview.
As well as the main Saints Row IV game, as well as a tonne of the DLC that has been release post-launch including both mission packs, over 25 new weapons, 15 new vehicles, over 60 new wardrobe items, 15 new homes and 6 new superpower elements, this PS4 release includes the major standalone/expansion called Gat Out Of Hell.
This major expansion takes ups the craziness to the extreme and sees the Saints' Johnny Gat and Kinzie are inadvertently transported down to Hell through a mysterious Ouija board. Battling demons and prominent historical figures culminating in a showdown with Satan himself.
Gat Out Of Hell takes crazy to the extreme!
Down in Hell players will get access to a brand new armoury, including an Energy Caster, a Locust Gun, and the Arm Charmageddon (a reclining chair with rockets and machine guns attached) themed after the sin 'sloth'. Much of Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell is set in Hell, which is roughly half the size of Steelport City in total. If exploring the depths of Hell gets lonely, the co-op mode returns, where players can work through the story content online.
From a visual standpoint the PS4 port will see enhancements across the board including character models, environments and shadows. The screenshots around this preview are taken from the Gat Out Of Hell expansion (if you want to see the main game, check out our PS3 preview here), but shows the crazy nature of the game. We would also expect, but it's not confirmed as yet, that given the title isn't seeing a full rebuild of the visuals like Rockstar did with Grand Theft Auto V it should be able to hit the 1080p FullHD resolution on the PS4 as well.
The Devil looks, well, bad-ass.
Volition have never skimped on the audio in these games with the original title having a voice cast including Troy Baker, Keith David, Daniel Dae Kim, Terry Crews, Michael Dorn, Neil Patrick Harris, and Danielle Nicolet. But what's a video game without Nolan North? He's here and you can set your character's voice to be Nolan - it's fantastic. We also loved the music used throughout the game which includes a wide range of artists including Thin Lizzy, Cypress Hill, Robert Palmer, Aerosmith, Junkie XL, A$AP Rocky and plenty more. In fact, the PS3 version of the game had 109 songs in total, and we expect the same, if not more in this PS4 release.
Saints Row IV: Re-Elected, with the Gat Out Of Hell expansion, looks like a fantastic release on PS4 and while the game isn't being totally reworked for the console, there are visual enhancements, plenty of DLC and the new standalone being bundled in which makes it fantastic value for both newcomers and fans of the franchise alike. Only a couple of weeks to go now.
So this is likely to be one of the most bizarre launch trailers you have ever seen, but here it is, the Launch Trailer for Gat Out Of Hell which also includes a look at Re-Elected - at least it gives a great sense of the crazy humour you can expect from the game.
