Released on PC, PS3 and XBox 360 in August 2013, Overkill's Payday 2 has been a pretty decent seller with over a million copies sold. Now, two years later the developers are going back to the well and improving the game for release on the latest consoles with Payday 2: Crimewave Edition coming to PS4 and XBox One. It's not just improved visuals with this release however, with the developers also including plenty of the DLC released after the games original launch.
Payday 2 is essentially a 4-player co-op game in which you play one of four characters, Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf or Chains, as they descend on Washington D.C. for an epic crime spree! As you complete missions - which involve everything from robbing convenience stores, to jewellery stores to banks - you will earn cash which will be able to upgrade weapons and equipment and prepare yourself for the next mission.
Visuals in Payday 2 are decent enough.
Payday 2: Crimewave Edition introduces new high-octane heists and new contacts The Dentist, voiced by actor Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), and The Butcher, voiced by Mira Furlan (Lost and Babylon 5). In addition to new jobs and multi-stage contracts, a wider range of weapons such as shotguns, sniper rifles and grenades deliver an explosive kick to the new enemy archetypes that players will face.
New characters, more masks and brand new perk system bring a whole new level of customization to the experience along with a fifth skill tree for seriously stealthy players. The all-new preplanning stage has also been added, providing everything that perfectionist players need to pull off their dream crime spree.
Wearing a mask during the heist!
Where the Crimewave Edition trumps the original release is the amount of DLC provided with the game. This includes the wide range of expansion packs as follows: Armored Transport, Gage Weapon Pack #1, Gage Weapon Pack #2, Gage Mod Courier Pack, Gage Sniper Pack, The Big Bank Heist, Gage Shotgun Pack, Gage Assault Pack, Hotline Miami, Gage Historical Pack, The Diamond Heist, Clover Character Pack, The Bomb Heists, Dragan Character Pack, The Death Wish Update, The Election Day Heist, The Shadow Raid Heist, John Wick Character Pack, The Hoxton Breakout Heist, Old Hoxton Character Pack, The Infamy Update, The Diamond Store Heist, and The White Christmas Heist.
By pre-ordering Payday 2: Crimewave Edition at selected retailers consumers will also get access to the "Hard Time Loot Bag" which contains several in-game pieces of content. These include a Red Dot Sight for use on all rifle weapons, exclusive Skull Mask, a PS4 exclusive Mask, a mask pattern called "I Love Overkill", a colour pattern and additional in-game cash.
Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is out in June.
With the increased power which the PS4 provides the game will also be getting a boost with the visuals with 1080p graphics promised which should make this a pretty gorgeous experience.
Make no mistake about it, this isn't a game for youngsters. In fact, even as an adult I had some moral questions about this game and they way it glorifies being a robber (it does carry a R18+ rating with the advice of "High impact crime themes, drug references and violence"). Sure, there are hundreds of other games that see you playing the bad guy, but Payday 2 seemed to have a bit more impact for me. Having said that, even on the PS3 this was a very slick game with some fantastic online gameplay and with this PS4 version seeing many improvements, and including a tonne of DLC, this is a game worth keeping an eye out for when it drops in June.
Below is a trailer called "Heists Done Right". Enjoy...
