Yakuza games always look wonderful.
Announced in Famitsu magazine in Japan in June 2010 Yakuza: Dead Souls, or Ryū ga Gotoku: Of the End in Japan, has been a long time coming for those outside Japan, but nine months after release in that territory, and that's allowing for the games delay following the horrific earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in early 2011, we are finally about to get our hands on this title.

Yakuza: Dead Souls is set in April 2011, after the events of Yakuza 4, and sees the undead multiplying and filling the streets of Tokyo’s red light district. The area is quarantined quickly, but degenerates into a district full of terror, panic and devastation. Survivors try to flee the city, but four men rise up to protect those they care most about. If you think zombies are bad, meet the Yakuza.

Surrounded by zombies... start shooting!
As they run through the battle-scarred streets and witness the scale of the destruction, they are seen as the final hope for the remaining residents of the city as they kick, snipe, batter and bulldoze their way through the hordes of zombies. Four characters must form an alliance and work together to save Japan from the zombie apocalypse.

So this game is essentially a third person shooter, but set in the seedy underworld in Japan with the inclusion of hostesses, clubs, karaoke, bars and more. But the core of this game sees four familiar characters battling for survival including Kazuma Kiryu, Shun Akiyama, Goro Majima and Ryuji Goda. The developers are promising a wide range of weapons such as guns, and here's hoping the gameplay matches that in the previous adventure games.

Yakuza Dead Souls is a PS3 exclusive.
Visually Yakuza: Dead Souls is looking pretty impressive with, as per the main franchise, a great representation of Japanese cities with a variety of locations and architecture, from the modern neon glowing cities, to the ancient buildings. Characters look wonderful, as do the zombies and if the game retains a solid frame rate then this game should be an impressive release on a techncial level.

We're massive fans of the Yakuza franchise here at Futuregamez and while this latest title is a little different in its focus and gameplay it will be interesting to see what this underappreciated development team can come up with. We find out in mid-March when Yakuza: Dead Souls hits the shelves, and the Playstation 3 exclusively, in Australia, Europe and America.
