Battles are absolutely massive.
When you think about it vikings haven't been represented too often in video games - but when you think about it they make a perfect subject matter; violent, ermm violent, and even more violent. Now Sega and developers The Creative Assembly are releasing a rather brutal looking game called Viking: Battle for Asgard. What makes this game so exciting is actually the developer. The Creative Assembly has been behind hit games Medievil I & II: Total War, Rome: Total War and the hit PS2 game Spartan: Total Warrior. They certainly have a great history of recreating massive battles and, as the screenshots show here, this game looks like following the same path.

Characters are superbly modelled as well.
A fierce struggle is taking place within Asgard, the realm of the Norse Gods. The Goddess Hel – daughter of Loki, Norse God of mischief - has been banished for defying Odin, Lord of Asgard. Angry at her fate, she seeks to release the ancient wolf-god Fenrir which legend tells will bring about Ragnarok - the apocalyptic battle that will destroy Asgard and the Gods. With her army of resurrected Viking warriors, Hel marches on the unsuspecting mortal realm of Midgard.

Odin’s daughter Freya, goddess of love and wisdom, is appointed the task of stopping Hel and defending the future of mankind. For her champion she chooses Skarin, a great but troubled young warrior, ignorant of the true reason for his favour with the Gods and thrust into the midst of their bitter war.

Now that's an explosion!
As Skarin you will enter a series of massive battles with hundreds of characters on screen at once. The fortunes of battles can be altered by assisting allies in trouble or assassinating key enemies. As you can imagine the combat will be pretty violent, and you'll even be able to dismember enemies. The game also stretches into the fantasy realm as you will be able to tame dragons and command them to rain fire upon your enemies as well as calling on magic and the power of the gods to assist you. Levels are fairly open and you will be able to run around the battlefields taking on anyone you wish.

Looking at the epic battle from afar.
Viking: Battle for Asgard certainly looks impressive. As you can see from the surrounding screenshots the battles take place on a massive scale, not only in the number of characters taking place in the battles, but also in the size of the levels, and the massive amounts of background detail.

With the game not due for release until early 2008 we can honestly say that this already looks like a winner, and is set to only get better. The Creative Assembly have a strong track record in large-scale battle games and with the power of the PS3 behind this game we're expecting some big things. Stay tuned...
