Graphics don't look too next-gen...
Untold Legends has been a hit game on the Playstation Portable. The first game, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, was a smash hit which remained in the Top 10 charts for several months and the recently released sequel (which we will review in the coming days) should also do quite well. Sony Online Entertainment has also been spending some time developing Untold Legends Dark Kingdom for the PS3. Although the initial screens (one of which can be seen here) didn't look that hot the latest screens in this preview certainly look massively improved. Still, this series has never been about the graphics, but rather the story and gameplay...

The story for this game is as follows... After serving the king loyall for years in foreigh conflicts an elite unit of knights return home to find it a changed place. Appalled by the discovery that dark magic has corrupted their kingdom and that the King now plans to use them against their own people, the knights devise a plan to assassinate the malevolent ruler. When the attempt on the kings life is foiled the would-be assassins barely escape into the ravaged lands below the Kings floating palace. On the run from and arm they once served and tainted by the dark magic of the King's sorcerers, the assasing must survive in a kingdom they no longer recognize. Vowing to avenge their fallen comerade, the heroes embark upon an epic journey to defeat the corrupt King by destroying the sources from which he draws his evil power.

The effects are really starting to take shape.
Essentially this is a hack and slash title, but the developers are adding in some all new abilities for characters in the game. It's now possible to smash enemies up against walls, or grab NPC's (non-playable characters) and use them as weapons. Characters in the game can chain melee attacks together, and also use magic to defeat enemies. Along your journeys will will be able to pick up an assortment of thousands of items and weapons. As anyone that has played the PSP games will tell you the range of weapons is enormous, and there's a tonne of gold to discover - we only hope that Sony Online Entertainment actually put the gold to good use this time as it was far to easy to amass large sums of gold, only to have it sitting around serving no purpose in the game.

Now that's a nice attacking move.
Sony Online Entertainment are have also confirmed that Untold Legends Dark Kingdom will include online gameplay. We're not sure how many players will be possible, but if we were to guess we would assume a party of four would be likely.

Interestingly this was one of the first games where the developers have confirmed the graphics resolution. While the Sony touted that the PS3 would be capable of outputting 1080p this game actually outputs at a maximum resolution of 720p. Whether this is due to the limitations of the game engine or rather a lack of programming experience to output 1080p is unclear, but the game should still look wonderful. Sadly the game wasn't available at launch on March 23rd but has been pushed back (for unknown reasons) to the first week of May in PAL territories with the game due out through Electronic Arts.
