It's not just dinosaurs to shoot at!
It has been a couple of years since Turok first appeared as a game from Acclaim on the Nintendo 64. In fact has has now been a decade since Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was released to critical, and commercial, success. Now that Acclaim has gone the way of the Do-Do this franchise has been picked up by Disney Interactive Studios and is currently in development at new development studio Propaganda Games. It must be said that the game is shaping up quite well with some great visuals and promising gameplay. In terms of the storyline this is essentially a 'reboot' for the series, so those looking for answers to the original games are likely to be disappointed.

Got him in your sights.
In Turok players take on the role of Joseph Turok, a former black ops commando, now part of an elite special forces squad, known as Whiskey Company, which is on a mission to take down a war criminal – Turok’s former mentor, Roland Kane. While Whiskey Company is traveling to the genetically altered planet inhabited by Kane and his soldiers, Whiskey Company’s ship is shot down. Turok must use his elite military training to elude Kane’s well-trained army, known as Mendel-Gruman, and the ravenous, unpredictable dinosaurs, huge insects and other massive creatures that populate the dangerous environment. Turok’s mission? Survive at all costs.

No giant crabs; we have GIANT SCORPIONS!
As with the original Acclaim titles this latest Turok is also a First Person Shooter. The key selling point though is that you are not only taking other human enemies, but also numerous dinosaurs. Species confirmed (although the game includes different "non-real" dinosaurs) include the T-Rex, Dilophosaurus, Pteranodon, mini-Raptors and even Giant Scorpions. (No, there's no Giant Crabs!). Dinosaurs will also attack both humans as well as other dinosaurs while enemy AI is also promised to react dynamically to situations.

Another great looking PS3 FPS!
In terms of weapons we've already seen quite a few in the trailer including items such as a shotgun, submachine gun, RPG, sniper rifle, flame thrower, grenades as well as more stealthy items such as a knife and bow. An impressive mix with more to be unveiled when the game is released.

Multi-player will also be catered for with up to 16 player able to participate in a range of modes although at the moment the only confirmed mode is Team Deathmatch. Still, it's not hard to imagine the possibilities of adding a couple of T-Rex's to a normal Deathmatch, or providing a Team Hunting type mode - they should result in some very interesting and entertaining gameplay scenarios that's for sure.

This T-Rex looks impressive..
Graphically this game looks the part too. Certainly the most impressive aspect is the recreation of the dinosaurs which stomp and move around the world in a realistic and menacing fashion. Using a modified version of the Unreal Engine 3 this game looks set to impress, and with over six months to go until release we only expect things to keep getting better.

At the moment the games international web site lists Turok for a release in February 2008 around the world (February 5 to be precise, although we believe that is the US date - we may be a week or two later). This is shaping up to be a great reinvention of the franchise.
