Anna and Lili battle it out in Tekken 6!
The Tekken series had a long history on the Playstation brand of consoles. Indeed it was one of the first, and certainly one of the most impressive, games on the PSOne which showed just how powerful the machine actually was. Since that 1995 release there have been numerous arcade versions released, and an impressive number of home console versions too. Now, in 2009, we are about to get Tekken 6 - the most refined, visually gorgeous and detailed game in the series.

In terms of plotline, well who really need it. This is a brawler and again we see the return of the King of the Iron Fist Tournament. Not much storyline is needed for this one-on-one combat game. Of course there are some cut-scenes and stories for the individual characters, but don't expect more then a few lines of plot for each character.

Why is there sheep in Tekken 6?
So what about new characters you ask? Well there are a couple of new console excluding characters including Russian Alisa Bosconovich a rather mysterious woman who has come from a top secret military facility. Next up is Swedish Lars Alexandersson who uses a karate fighting style and is the son of Heihachi. Beyond that there are some new characters that appeared in the arcade game including Bob, Leo, Miguel Caballero Rojo and Zafina.

In terms of the other playable characters pretty much everyone seen in the series is here (or a damn lot of them anyway). These include Anna Williams, Armor King, Asuka Kazama, Baek Doo San, Bruce Irvin, Bryan Fury, Christie Monteiro, Craig Marduk, Devil Jin, Eddy Gordo, Feng Wei, Ganryu, Heihachi Mishima, Hwoarang, Jack-6, Jin Kazama, Julia Chang, Kazuya Mishima, King, Kuma, Lee Chaolan, Lei Wulong, Lili, Ling Xiaoyu, Marshall Law, Mokujin, Nina Williams, Panda, Paul Phoenix, Raven, Roger Jr., Sergei Dragunov, Steve Fox, Wang Jinrei, and Yoshimitsu.

This is the Campaign Mode in Tekken 6.
If you're not happy with the developers fighter roster then the game also gives you the ability to create new characters and customize them with every imaginable detail. Customize their hairstyles, apparel, fashion accessories, tattoos, etc. You can even select their fighting style based upon the styles.

Tekken 6 includes a Campaign mode which allows you to select from any of the 40-odd main characters in the game and then, fighting besides an AI controlled second fighter, battle your way through a series of levels taking on an increasing number of enemies. As you progress through the levels you will be able to pick up weapons dropped by enemies or littered around the levels in crates and so on. These weapons include staffs, machine guns, flame throwers, and even giant robots among other things. Boss characters within the Campaign mode are made up of the 40 other main characters in the game. The good news is that the Campaign mode should also be playable online in co-op for up to two players.

Females in Tekken 6 look quite special.
One of the most impressive aspects of this release is bound to be the ability to compete in online matches. We've already mentioned that the Campaign mode should be playable online, but we know that the Arcade mode will certainly be playable online for 2-players. We can only hope that the developers have fixed up the issues that plagued the online component of Namco's equally brilliant Soul Calibur IV. When in the online matches it was brilliant, but the lobby system was a bit of a pain. Naturally we expect Tekken 6 to include a full online ranking and leader board system.

The range of moves in Tekken 6 is impressive.
Visually this game is a cracker with some stunning detail on the main fighters. The actual fighting arenas are still flat, and aren't the most detailed of environments they do have some destructible objects such as walls and floors which open up new areas, but this game is all about the two fighters and the delightful animation and wide range of moves. In that regard it already looks like Tekken 6 will be at the top of the pile.

Tekken 6 is a game which fighting fans will no doubt lap up in droves. Whether this game can bring new gamers to the PS3, or indeed the entire fighting genre, remains to be seen, but at this stage Namco Bandai seem to have all the right ingredients, phenomenal graphics, solid gameplay, a massive fighter roster, and some compelling game modes with online gameplay. Expect this game to hit shelves in late 2009.
