SingStar Motown - PS3 Preview
|17/9/2009||Sony||Sony||SCEE London Studios|
Well it's coming up to Christmas and just as you're bound to see an increase in in people at shopping centres, and drunken idiots on the road, you're also sure to see more SingStar titles from Sony. The first SingStar was released in December 2007, which makes this the seventh release on the system in only 22 months. That's a lot of discs, and certainly a lot of songs to test out your vocal chords to.
|Lionel Richie in SingStar Motown.|
This time the focus is on one of the most loved music genres of all time - Motown. Primarily based in the 1960's and 1970's the era gave us some of the most loved musicians and tracks of all time. Sony have gone all out to ensure this package includes some of the most loved artists of our time including Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Supremes and The Jackson 5 to name a few. If you own a PS2 you'll get 25 tracks in total, but if you have a PS3 you'll receive five bonus tracks (more on that later).
In the slim chance that you are unaware what SingStar is, the game is essentially Sony Europe's karaoke game. Using original songs (not dodgy remakes), and original video clips where available, the game scores you according to the pitch of your voice. Each disc comes with 30 songs to test your vocal chords, but given the advent of online connectivity the Playstation 3 version allows you to download hundreds of other songs for a measly $2.45 each! While great as a single-player experience it's when you get a second person that the game comes alive with various duets and battles available.

It seems that this release will be in line with previous versions in terms of game modes and interface - although patch 4.20 has just been released which adds extra features to all Singstar titles on the PS3 including singing clubs and video editing to make your own clips recorded with the Playstation Eye.
|The Supremes, You Can't Hurry Love.|
As with any SingStar release, the package is only going to be as good as its track listing. SingStar Motown is a cracker in our books with the following tracks included...
David Ruffin - Put A Little Love In Your Heart
Diana Ross & The Supremes - Reflections
Jimmy Ruffin - What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted
Lionel Richie - My Destiny
Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - Jimmy Mack
Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - Nowhere To Run
Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On?
Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston - It Takes Two
Mary Wells - My Guy
Rick James - Super Freak
Smokey Robinson - Being With You
Smokey Robinson And The Miracles - The Tracks Of My Tears
Stevie Wonder - For Once in My Life
The Commodores - Brick House
The Commodores - Easy|
The Contours - Do You Love Me
The Four Tops - Reach Out I'll Be There
The Isley Brothers - This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)
The Jackson 5 - ABC

The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love

The Temptations - Papa Was A Rollin' Stone
The Velvelettes - Needle In A Haystack
The Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself (Sugarpie Honeybunch) *
The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back *
Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - Dancing In The Street *
Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine *
The Supremes - Stop In The Name Of Love *
The first thing to note about the above track listing is that the last five songs with the asterix's next to them are exclusive to the PS3 version of the game, the PS2 version misses out on these tracks. Again we also expect that (unlike other certain music games) and songs purchased within the SingStore will be instantly viewable and playable from within this disc. Of course SingStar Motown will retain the features and functionality of My SingStar Online - the online community where you can record yourself, either via video or audio, then have segments of those performances uploaded to be rated by other SingStar gamers.
|Video isn't great, but it's 45 years old!|
In terms of the video quality as you can probably see from some of these screenshots some of the video clips probably won't be overly exciting. You have to remember though that these classic songs are approaching 50 years old now in some cases, and that's a good couple of decades before music videos became a key marketing tool with the launch of MTV in 1981.
|The Temptations, Get Ready.|
We really couldn't have asked for more from SingStar Motown we all know the drill by now and the game modes will be familiar. This is another potential brilliant release in what could be a stunning few months with SingStar Take That due by Christmas as well, and rumours of a SingStar Michael Jackson title starting to circulate as well. Expect SingStar Motown to hit shelves on September 17.
