Quantum Theory from Tecmo Koei is out soon.
While Tecmo Koei would be a household name, or at least each of those names would be known to gamers as seperate entities prior to their recent merger, the development team behind this title, Team Tachyon, may not be so well known. They are, like Team Ninja, a subsidiary of Namco and whose previous work includes the fairly decent PSP title Undead Knights. Quantum Theory is a big title for the development team as it sees them working on a triple-A title on the Playstation 3. A big gamble for any company, but one which appears to be paying off if early impressions hold true to the final game.

Quantum Theory has players take on the role of the massive, gun-wielding warrior Syd and battle through an unpredictable, shape-shifting battlefield, aided by the mysterious acrobatic Filena. Many years have passed since the world war inflicted catastrophic damage on the human race, leaving only a few survivors. In their new community "Cocoon", life has been threatened by a black material called Erosion, creating a post-apocalyptic environment. The erosion of the Tower intensifies as the players climb up through the moving landform.

Textures could be a little better.
It must be said that upon first glancing this game there is a slight passing resemblance to the God of War franchise with oversized main characters, a cover system and plenty of run and gun gameplay. But there are plenty of differences beyond this. You don't work alone in the game as Filena will also work through the levels with you. She will act on her own but at times you can also perform actions as a pair—in. Syd can toss Filena towards some distant enemies for some close-quarter combat for instance. Sadly though, because Felina will come in and out of the storyline there will not be any form of co-op in the game. Another unique aspect to this game is the way in which the battlefield transforms as you progress throguh the battles.

In terms of online modes Quantum Theory includes four online game modes, the details of which are yet to be revealed other then the game will include Team Battle and Battle Royale modes. At this stage we aren't even sure of the number of players.

Another Quantum Theory screenshot.
Admittedly on a visual level this game looks little sub-par. The character models are all fantastic however we still have some reservations about the texturing and lack of objects within the levels. We can only hope that this very busy game will retain a solid frame rate during the battles which will be key to getting the most out of this title.

Originally expected to be released around March 2010 the six month delay has given the development team extra time to polish off Quantum Theory, and hopefully that includes some of our concerns about the visuals. If the gameplay comes together, and technically the game is proficient, then shooter fans should get ready for a very entertain title.
