Attempting to block the shot in 2K10!
Last years NBA 2K9 was a hit game both critically and commercially. With sales surpassing EA's NBA Live 09 by about 50%, and review scores averaging 83% for 2K's effort versus 77% for EA's title. That's an amazing result, but not a surprise with the developers, Visual Concepts, having worked on the series since way back in the Dreamcast days.

As you can imagine there is no storyline for this game, at least not like a RPG, adventure or action title, but you are basically following a player, or basketball team through the highs and lows of the sport throughout a period of time - be it the playoffs, a season or more. NBA 2K10 is choc full of game modes, enhancements from last years version, and little details that you could write a book about. So let's have a look at some of the bigger items...

The interface is slick.
For many the key game mode in this title will be the "My Player Mode". This allows you to create the ultimate NBA player and guide his every career move. Start as an undrafted rookie in the Summer Circuit; work hard enough and you may get an invite to participate in an NBA teamís training camp, or you may end up in the D-League. The road to being an NBA star is a long and hard battle.

Signature Play pulls together all of NBA 2K's player Signature Styles and adds in all-new Signature Tendencies and facial expressions, creating NBA 2K10 teams that play and react like their real life counterparts for an unbelievably realistic NBA experience.

NBA Today includes re-world stats.
As one would expect these days the game does connect to the internet to provide NBA today where real world matchups, news and stats are downloaded to the PS3 to provide the most accurate representation of the NBA today. The 2K Insider and his team of NBA analysts continue to keep NBA 2K10 fresh with up-to-date team and player information, including roster and lineup moves, trades, injuries and player ratings.

Of course online gameplay is confirmed with all the game modes playable online. One potentially very cool option is that to create Crews. With this you are able to round up your friends and build the ultimate squad, using either your created players from My Player mode or an actual NBA team, then go online and battle other Crews for bragging rights and progression points as you try to climb your way to the top of the Crew leaderboard rankings.

Player models in NBA 2K10 look fantastic.
In terms of actual gameplay there have been a few changes and improvements. All-new easy-to-use dribbling and post game controls allow you to pull off ankle breaking Iso-Motion moves and dominate like Kobe from the perimeter to the paint while the new Shut Down D provides innovative defensive controls that allow you to shadow your opponentís every move, deny position off-ball, and even select how you want to contest shots.

Courtside Sim in the XBox 360 version!
Graphically there is little doubt that - like previous versions - this is going to be a terrific game. The players are motion captured, and accurately modelled due to the official licensing. Menus and interfaces are as slick as ever and the game includes 28 music tracks from a variety of artists with the highlights including Flo Rida, Kanye West, The Game and MGMT.

We really have enjoyed 2K Sports' NBA 2K series over the years. While EA's efforts are all over the shop (but more often rubbish then good) this franchise has managed to offer a solid game year on year with improvements made with every iteration. NBA 2K10 will be in stores in a couple of weeks time and sports gans would do well to check it out.
