In recent years I've been extremely disappointed with EA's Medal of Honor series. It seemed to be in a downward spiral as competitors games, such as Activision's Call of Duty only seem to get better. But I say 'seemed' because all of a sudden this series has been brought to life with this game, Medal of Honor: Airborne. Before we get onto the most exciting part (that being the gameplay) let's have a look at the storyline.

In the game you step into the boots of Boyd Travers, Private First Class of the 82nd Airborne Division and engage in battles throughout Europe. From rocky beginnings in Sicily to war-winning triumphs in Germany, there are a lot of battlefields to enter.

Airdrop into the battlefield, anywhere.
From rocky beginnings in Sicily to war-winning triumphs in Germany, each mission begins behind enemy lines, with an intense and fully interactive airdrop. View the entire operation from the air, and then control your parachute to choose your landing spot. That's right. You can basically land anywhere at all on the battlefield. Land right in the middle near safe dropzones marked with flares where you will find friendly soldiers and supplies available, but also quite a few more enemies, land on the outskirts to work your way to the targets stealhfully or land on the ledges of buildings to start you battle from indoors. It's your choice. The best thing about this is that every time you enter the battle it will take place from a different location and perspective giving near infinite ways to complete the missions!

A wide variety of historically accurate customisable weapons are at your disposal. Develop skills on your personalized weapon with field modifications that remain persistent throughout the entire game. Each weapon has three levels of upgrade - one is for extra ammunition, another increases accuracy and a third decreases recoil. Speaking of which weapons in the game include maching guns, rifles, pistols, grenades and plenty of other World War II based weapons. Jeeps will also be included in the game thanks to a deal with the vehicle manufacturer.

We do have some reservations about Electronic Arts' claim that 'Medal of Honor Airborne will present the MOST BELIEVABLE HUMANS in a game' is a tall order to stand up to - and if you're going to make the claim we're sure as hell going to test it! We'll also have to see if the open levels are really large and detailed enough to warrant the replay value which is being promised given the

As expected the game will also inlcude multi-player options. As yet Electronic Arts are remaining a little quiet on the modes (Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are pretty much certain) as well as the number of players (we expect 16 at the least, but 24 or 32 are also possible).

Watch out for the tank.
Graphics in the game look pretty nice. Sure, some of the texturing could be a little better, and some locations look a little on the flat side, but the game moves at a pretty frantic pace and there are dozens of soldiers and explosions on the screen at any time. From the videos we've seen Electronic Arts need to do a bit more work with the animation of the soldiers - especially when running, but with quite a bit more time to go in development we expect this to be improved. To be honest I don't expect this to be the best on the system, but it won't be far off either.

For the first time in a long time we can honestly say we are very excited about a Medal of Honor title. Sure the jump to next-generation hardware always bring new promises with it however it's the way in which the developers are tackling this title and providing such open-ended gameplay that makes this such an interesting prospect. Expect a November release.
