Now that's an impressive explosion.
First announced at the Leipzig Games Convention in August 2007 it has been a long wait for Mafia II to hit the shelves. Indeed by the time this game is released it would have been three years since that very announcement. But that simply shows the dedication from 2K Games in the franchise to ensure this game has the polish it deserves and with over 2 million fans of the original game there is a lot riding on the success of this title for 2K.

Born the son of a poor immigrant, Vito Scaletta is a beaten down Italian American who is trying to escape the life of poverty that consumed his childhood. It was on the streets that Vito learns that joining the Mafia is the only route to wealth and respect for people of his standing. Wanting to escape the life of hardship that his father led, he dreams about becoming a "Made Man".

Vehicles play a major role in Mafia II.
A petty criminal his whole life, Vito, along with his childhood friend, Joe, will descend into the world of organized crime. Together, they will work to prove themselves to the Mafia as they try to make their names on the streets. Starting with low-level jobs like robbery and stealing cars, Vito and Joe escalate quickly up the Mafia family ladder... but the life as a wise guy isn't quite as glamorous as it seems.

Mafia II puts gamers in the middle of the the 1940's and 1950's Mafia in a third person action title which features gunfights, hand-to-hand combat, and plenty of vehicles to drive around in. The developers have recreated a large open world which suits the sandbox styled game. While you will have missions to complete in certain order you will also be given the freedom to explore the city and partake in other activities, not too dissimilar to a certain Rockstar title.

A couple of thugs in the street.
The game takes place in an area of approximatley 10-12 square miles of Empire City which has inspiration from New York, but has been created specifically for this game. One difference between this sequel and the original game is that the map contains a lot more urban areas rather then rural sprawl so there will be a lot more to explore.

If there is one disappointment it's that there won't be any multiplayer in the game - or at least nothing has been announced to date. We are also unsure if there will be any downloadable content released somewhere down the line.

Visually the game certainly looks impressive with a wonderful recreation of the 1950s on offer thanks to 2K Czech's proprietary engine. Characters, buildings, cars, clothing, weapons and signage all looks authentic and it's clear the 2K Czech have put plenty of effort into this side of the game. Indeed the graphics engine is so robust that the developers are using it for realtime cut-scenes as well. The soundtrack is a mixture of licensed and original music and has been selected to reflect the era with plenty of tunes from the 1950's to suit the games atmosphere.

Admittedly we're pretty excited about the prospects for Mafia II. The genre lends itself to some pretty exciting gameplay and scenarios and with an impressive original game we only expect this sequel to be even better. Expect a release in America on August 24th, and the rest of the world on August 27th.
