He's about to be crunched!
In early 2005 Electronic Arts showed off Madden NFL Next Gen for the XBox 360 - and PS3 which, at the stage, was due for release in early 2006. That early showing was pretty much pre-rendered representations of what the company wanted to achieve. Well, now we have the real thing and while the graphics aren't quite as realistic, on many levels they also surpass that target video. Madden NFL '07 is certain to be one of the hottest games on the Playstation 3 when it launches this November in America, and in March in Europe and Australia.

Typical in-game graphics (at 30% complete).
We all know and love the Madden NFL series so we won't go over the known. What we will look are the changes to this next-generation version, and there have been a few. For the first time ever, step up as the lead blocker to create a hole, and then take control of the tailback and smash through, overpower, or slash away from would-be tacklers as you fight for every yard. Innovative rushing controls give you a game-breaking ground attack featuring all-new jukes, cutbacks, and the distinct running styles of your favorite backs. Between the tackles or in the open field, run to daylight with Madden NFL '07. For the first time, use actual plays from your favorite team's defensive playbook to shut down the running game, pressure the quarterback, or force key turnovers.

A Hall of Fame Mode allows gamers to play their way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame by taking complete control of any position on the field. Your actions on and off the field determine your impact on the game. The new Franchise Mode now allows gamers to Scout collegiate prospects with the all-new NFL Draft Scouting System and the College All-Star Game, or watch players around the NFL impact their teams with the new Franchise Player Roles feature. The game will also allow you to play "Play Now" or "Season" matches.

PS3 graphics look nice enough.
So what about Madden NFL '07 on the Playstation 3? What can Sony's new uber console bring to the franchise? Well first of all Electronic Arts will be making use of the PS3's tilt sensing control. It will now be possible to tilt the controller in one direction or another to effect a bump or hit similar to the hit stick, fake a snap, or try draw the defensive team offside. This will work from both ends of the ground so you can now knock the ball loose, or fend of an oncoming defender.

Another of the major changes is that the PS3 version of the game will include 17 new stats for the players. These stats include the likes of how well the player can elude opponents, spin out of trouble or how good their footwork is among others. The developers are also modifying the players running styles so each now has a "signature" running style.

Graphics in this game are nothing short of spectacular. While the game only runs at 720p the animation on the players, crowds, and people on the side of the field is absolutely sublime. While we haven't seen the game in the flesh as yet we have it on good authority that the Playstation 3 version has several enhancements over the XBox 360 game with slightly sharper textures on the players and field, and also enhanced animations. Most of the screens release by Electronic Arts are replay based, but the company did release some typical viewpoint screens at the E3 show (the ones with the HUD and/or the 30% complete logo). Even at that very early stage of development it looked stunning, but the last couple of months have seen staggering enhancements.

There is little doubt that Madden NFL '07 will be a very good title. The game has been confirmed as a launch title in America and we also expect it to be available in Europe and Australia when the Playstation 3 launches next March.
