Deadly; in the heat of battle.
What can we say about Capcom's Devil May Cry series. The first game was a complete blast (reviewed here). The second (reviewed here) was a complete letdown while the third (reviewed here) was up there with the original. One thing is certain, gamers love the series as it has now racked up an impressive 7 million sales worldwide. Devil May Cry 4 was actually first unveiled at E3 2005 when Sony showed off much of the PS3. It had fans the world over drooling at the prospect of the series moving to Sony's latest console. It has been two years since the first rather sparse CG-only teaser trailer, but Capcom - as the game nears completion - are bringinout out some more details.

One of many massive boss encounters.
Set in the costal city of Fortuna, the game’s action begins when Dante bursts in on a ceremony being conducted by the Order of the Sword, an ancient sect based in the coastal city of Fortuna, which worships Sparda the devil warrior who saved mankind. As Dante begins indiscriminately slaughtering sect members Nero fears for the safety of his childhood friend Kyrie and confronts Dante in order to protect her.

With players taking control of Nero, the immense power of the Devil Bringer begins to be revealed as a fierce confrontation against Dante ensues. After an intense struggle Dante decides to leave this particular fight for another day and makes good his escape. Chasing after him Nero is suddenly stopped in his tracks as mysterious portals begin appearing throughout Fortuna spewing forth ghastly demons. What is the reason for this demonic invasion, is Dante responsible?

Ready for a frosty reception?
As new leading man Nero players will be able to unleash incredibly powerful and stylish attacks and non-stop combos using a combination of the Devil Bringer arm and the Exceed system, both of which are new gameplay mechanics for the series. Fans of Dante won’t be disappointed as he too will be playable during the course of the game. Yet again the game will rank your progress through the levels by rating your combos and attack patterns. Also returning are the various orbs which can be used to upgrade your abilities.

Hitting a deadly combo.
Graphically Devil May Cry 4 is very impressive and will certainly be a showcase for the Playstation 3. As you can see from the surrounding screenshots the game looks absolutely glorious with stunning texturing, and some superb effects including sparks and fire. Level and character design has always been a strength of the series and we have seen quite a variety in this game already for your normal human-like enemies to lizards and even a boss that appears to be a flaming bull - as you can see near the top of this preview. Devil May Cry 4 will run at 60fps at 720p.

More dark and moody graphics.
Capcom has now confirmed that Devil May Cry 4 will be released in February 2008, a little later then we expected when the title was first announced. It has also been confirmed that Capcom will release the game as both a standard package, and also as a Special Edition, the pricing and contents of which have not been disclosed. Capcom have also announced that the game would no longer be a Playstation 3 exclusive (nor even just Sony systems for that matter), but is also being developed for the XBox 360 and PC as well. We assume the games will be the same, however there is a slim chance of exclusive content on each system - perhaps the PS3 version will make use of the Sixaxis' tilt control abilities. Time will tell. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting title in the coming months...
