Dead Rising 2 is on PS3 this October.
Sadly PS3 owners never had the joy to play Capcom's Dead Rising a couple of years ago as the game has remained a XBox 360 exclusive - perhaps given that it was released a couple of months before the PS3 launched it wasn't feasible to port the title, and the PS2 certainly wasn't up to the task. Now, some four years later the sequel is about to be released and PS3 owners will certainly be feeling the love come late September.

While the original game was developed within Capcom at Production Studio One, this sequel is being handled by Canadian developer Blue Castle Games who are best know for their baseball titles, The Bigs and its sequel. Production has been closely overseen by Capcom and some of the original developers, including producer Keiji Inafune, are working with the developers so we expect this game to impress as the first title did. So what's the story of this game then...

Getting personal with a zombie.
Several years have passed since the Wilamette incident, and Dead Rising 2 shifts the action from the everyday world of mid-West America to the glitz and glamour of Fortune City, America's latest and greatest entertainment playground. People flock to Fortune City from around the globe to escape from reality and the chance to win big and for some, this means competing in Terror is Reality.

Like millions of Americans former national motocross champion, Chuck Greene, is gripped by the TV sensation that is Terror is Reality. Hosted by the flamboyant Tyrone King, Terror is Reality pits ordinary members of the public against an arena full of zombies with a simple challenge kill more zombies than your opponents and stay alive with the winner collecting big money and the chance to come back and secure even greater prizes. So, what is it that has forced Chuck to come to Fortune City and risk his life in the modern day gladiatorial contest, is he trying to recapture the fame of his motocross days, does he have a reason to hate zombies, or is it simply the lure of big money?

Not Wolverine, this is Dead Rising 2!
Essentially Dead Rising 2 is a third person action game which sees dozens, and often hundreds, of zombies out to get you. Of course the usual range of weapons are available including guns and swords, but sometimes that simply won't be enough. Fortunately Chuck is pretty good with improvisation and is able to take everyday objects from within the world to use them as weapons. A piece of wood and a lawnmower become Portamower, the handheld mower that cuts zombies down to size in an instant, while a garden rake and car battery combine to create an electrified zombie prod. How about strapping some chainsaws onto a canoe paddle to swing around furiously? There are literally thousands of combinations (Just look at the screenshot next to this paragraph for another combo - boxing gloves and knives!?!).

Using a Swordfish as a weapon.
Multiplayer will also be supported in this game with Dead Rising 2 allowing players to experience the carnage with a series of multiplayer challenges for up to 4-players via online play. Whether you're jumping into giant hamster balls and mowing down the undead; seeing who can place the most drill buckets on zombies' heads, or taking to the arena on a motorbike with chainsaws for handlebars, the challenges will feature exactly the kind of over-the-top action and humour that Dead Rising is known for. Adding to the competitive nature of these events is the ability to prevent your opponents from scoring, ensuring fierce rivalries as competitors fight dirty to claim victory.

Yes, even a wheelchair can become a weapon in Dead Rising 2!
Visually this game looks a treat and we can certainly expect plenty of gory visuals too with the game being awarded a MA15+ rating here in Australia with the warning "Strong horror violence, blood and gore and sexual references". Perhaps the biggest concern with any game like this is keeping a solid frame rate despite the number of enemies on-screen (which has jumped from 800 in the first game to over 7,000 this time around) and it will be interesting to see how well the developers have overcome this.

We have to say that we're pretty excited to play Dead Rising 2 which it hits the PS3 this September - that's this month in a couple of weeks in fact! Make sure you get your pre-orders in as this looks like one hell of a game, and plenty of fun.
