Dead Island is coming out in September.
One genre that continues to perform is that which sees humans trying to survive zombie hordes. Of course Resident Evil is the posterchild franchise but there are plenty of others including Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising and Dead Nation to name a few higlights. Looking to muscle in on the genre is this latest game from developers Techland. So what's it about then? Read on...

The island of Banoi is a lush, tropical paradise in the South Pacific where its flagship Royal Palms Resort serves as the ultimate getaway for vacationers with money to burn. However, all good things must soon come to an end and the picturesque resort falls into madness, carnage and chaos after a mysterious and contagious zombie outbreak claims its once peaceful atmosphere. Cut off from the rest of the world, only four individuals who strangely find themselves immune to zombification have the power to protect the remaining survivors from the horrors of the island, to discover whats really going on and find a way to escape before their own fatal ends. This is Dead Island... a paradise to die for.

So Dead Island is a first person action game with support for up to 4-players in co-op modes while the game has a heavy emphasis on melee combat. Each of the characters in the game has a stamina bar which will need to be closely managed. Run out of stamina and you won't have the energy to use your weapon against the attacking zombies. Speaking of zombies the developers are promising a wide rage from easy beats to tougher boss styled encounters.

Perhaps the most impressive element is that while the game is set on the fictional island of Banoi it is also an open-world title meaning you can go anywhere and explore anything. You have the choice of four main characters - Xian Mei and employee at the resort, Sam B a one-hit wonder rap star, Logan a former NFL star and Purna a Police Officer from Sydney (Huzzah! Go the Aussie!). The game offers plenty of customisation too with RPG elements for character development as well as weapon customisation.

Dead Island's visuals are very impressive. This is the character Xian Mei.
Developers Techland, who are most well known in the West for their Call of Juarez franchise, are using their own Chrome Engine 5 to power this game and it certainly looks impressive. Detail in the game world is extremely impressive, while the characters all move around with plenty of realism.

There was plenty of buzz around this game at the E3 Show this year, and for good reason. It looks and sounds wonderful, and has gameplay that many hardcore gamers love. With a release set for September 2011 through distributers QV Software in Australia (Square-Enix are handling the title in North America) this is a game well worth keeping an eye out for.
