What the hell is that?!
Monolith Productions have really taken off as a developer in recent years. After the superb FPS F.E.A.R. on the PC (the PS3 version was a bit average - but they didn't handle the port) they followed up with the 2005 title Condemned: Criminal Origins which hit the PC and XBox 360. It was a very solid title with average score of 82.4% on GameRankings for the XBox 360 version. The sequel has been in development for some time now, and Playstation 3 owners will be glad to hear they will also be able to join in on the fun. While the game was originally targeted at a 2007 release it has now been moved into an early 2008 release to give the developers as much time as possible to make this the sequel it deserves to be.

Doing some forensic testing.
The events in Condemned 2 unfold a year after the first game. Players assume the identity of Ethan Thomas, former Serial Crimes Unit investigator, who has been called back to duty to track down his missing partner. The disturbing events from Ethan’s past have left him a broken man – a desperate burnout drifting aimlessly through society in an inexplicable decline. Fighting inner demons throughout his one-man investigation into a sinister conspiracy, Ethan will need to use anything and everything in the environment to survive as he unravels the mysteries shrouding the city in darkness.

One of the more recent screenshots!
The great news for gamers is that the development team has listened to comments from gamers about the first game. The storyline has been simplified and will wrap up a little better this time. The gameplay has also been refined with an all-new combat system built from the ground up. Ethan can perform offensive and defensive chains, as well as grapples and holds - accurate body physics create bone-shattering results when dealing damage during violent encounters.

Grabbing onto another character.
Yet again gamers will be given a wide range of weapons to use including over 30 blunt instruments such as bricks, tire irons and mop buckets to a 10 different projectile weapons including submachine guns and crossbows. Condemned 2 also includes a host of new high-tech forensic tools to assist in solving murders. In the first game the forensic instruments were used to progress the story at certain points. Now, however, these tools can be used at any points throughout the levels.

One of the unique aspects of this title is the ‘emotional response’ system. There are certain points during the game where the player is prompted to activate an emotional response within a certain time frame. This could be as simple as Ethan giving someone the finger to shoving someone out of the way to get to someone who may be pissing him off. It’s all about attitude, a nasty one at that.

Now that's some haunting shit...
Multi-player will be supported with modes including the hauntingly sounding "Circle of Death". Deathmatch modes will also be included but unfortunately at this stage there is no word on how many players will be supported but we would expect at least 8-players and possibly double that.

Graphically this game is best described as moody. There are a tonne of new environments including outdoor areas as well as varied times of day. It's the character design that really stands out though. Have a look at some of the screenshots to see what I mean - this game could give you more chills then any Silent Hill title that's for sure.

Go on, sock it to him!
From an audio standpoint fans of the original may be disappointed to hear that Greg Gruenberg won't be back to voice Ethan as the developers wanted someone with a darker and more hardened voice. With the power of next-gen systems we expect some pretty haunting sounds to be emitted from our speakers for the game.

While we haven't played the original title we have to say that we're quite pleased to be seeing Condemned 2: Bloodshot hitting the Playstation 3 around April 7th 2008.
