Alone in the Dark - PS3 Preview
Alone in the Dark can be considered the grandfather of the survival horror genre. The original game came out in 1992 on the PC and was warmly received by the gaming press and public alike. Over the years there has been three sequels which leads us into this next-generation fifth title.
Having previously been announced for PC and XBox 360 it was a pleasant, if somewhat expected, announcement from Atari at the 2006 E3 show which confirmed the game was also heading to the Playstation 3. It's a good thing too as it actually looks very impressive if the E3 trailer is anything to go by. David Nadal, Game Director, Eden Games had the following to say about the Playstation 3 version, and he is quite positive on the system. "The team is having a fantastic time bringing Alone in the Dark to life using the incredible processing power of the PS3 kits. Itís a very exciting time for us, when we begin to see how the powerful new generation of hardware can help us realize our ideas in a way that hasnít been possible before."
While most of this game remains under wraps Atari have been keen to talk about the episodic styled content. No, it's not downloadable levels but rather Alone in the Dark will be split up into a series of chunks of 30-40 minutes of gameplay. Each time the player launches a saved game, the episode will begin with a video summary of the previous episode to quickly re-immerse the player in the story, removing the need to remember where they were or what they were doing. Every episode will close with a nail-biting cliff-hanger ending to rattle playersí nerves, and if the player is leaving the game a video teaser of the next episode will play to leave them wanting more. It's an interesting concept however how different it will be to a game which includes different levels remains to be seen.
|The game should look pretty sharp.|
Atari currently have Alone in the Dark scheduled for a release in late November. We really do need to see a lot more of this game before we can not only tell you if it will be any good, but exactly how well it plays!
