These are gorgeous visuals.
Almost every single RPG fan would have heard of Final Fantasy, Zelda or even Dragon Quest which never makes it out here, but there is another RPG series which is just as big, just as exciting - Ys. Konami are set to release their lastest game in the magnificent Ys series. In fact, the series is about to reach a milestone with this game. Not only is it the sixth in the series (most of which were only seen in Japan - or in very small quanitities outside that territory) but also marks the series spanning reaching 20 years of age. Sadly this is still of the most underrated RPG series in existance. Perhaps Ys: The Ark of Napishtim will help it earn new fans.

Heading down the stairs.
Ys tracks the adventures of hero, Adol Christian, whose three magical swords grant him special abilities, attacks and magic spells. Washed ashore on an uncharted island, Adol Christin begins a new journey in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim. Adol’s three magical swords are imbued with elemental powers, used to uncover secrets that lie within mysterious whirlpools surrounding a tropical island. His fantastical tale is an incredible journey through beautiful environments, both at sea and on land, as Adol explores the mysterious ‘Vortex of Canaan’. As you advance through the game you’ll unlock incredible hidden artwork and computer-generated movies that showcase the legacy of the Ys series.

The graphics have a wonderful style.
In terms of gameplay Ys: The Ark of Napishtim plays in a very similar fashion to other Japanese styled RPG's. The game was originally released on Windows 98 PC's in Japan in 2003, but is only now making its way to PS2 and PSP systems. The extra development time has given the developers to add more features including a wonderful new CG intro, and tweak the game to perfection. The game manages to combine real-time, fast-paced action and strategic boss battles - some of which will have your jaw hitting the floor, they're that spectacular.

Nice light...
As you can see from the surrounding screenshots this game is choc full of lush environments, beautifully rendered characters and animated 3D backdrops combine to create the setting for Adol's newest adventure. A moving musical score has also been specially composed to suit the majestic nature of the game. Ys: The Ark of Napishtim will also include full voice overs for all the non playable characters Adol meets on his adventures.

Expect a release on PS2 in September and PSP sometime later in the year, or early next year. By the way, the PSP version will be virtually identical to the PS2 game so you now have a choice, on a large screen or on the road.
