It seems to be the military styled games have taken off as a monster genre in the 1990's. Games such as Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and SOCOM: US Navy Seal's are just a few of the franchises to have captured the minds, and wallets, of gamers worldwide. Developers Argonaut have jumped on this bandwagon with thier latest game SWAT: Global Strike Team a game which has spawned out of Sierra's legendary SWAT series of games.

Founded in 2008, The Global Strike Team is an international offshoot from the SWAT organization tasked with helping countries and organizations around the globe to resolve situations they cannot accomplish successfully on their own. As a member of the SWAT Global Strike Team gamers will be called to duty at a moment’s notice, confronted with missions unlike any seen before.

You are Mathias Kincaid, a former member of the U.S. Army’s elite Delta Force turned SWAT: GST element leader. The year is 2018 and you’re in command of the recently formed SWAT: Global Strike Team—a squad comprised of the three best operators the special forces and law enforcement communities have to offer. Your task is to use all means available, including cutting-edge weaponry and next-generation gear, to bring international criminals to justice.

AS stated on the official web site SWAT: Global Strike Team is a first-person tactical arcade game combining the strategic elements of SWAT 3 with the instantly accessible arcade action of the Virtua Cop series. I'm not sure if moving the game to a more arcade style is such a great idea in this day and age of realism, however if it works, it works. This game includes 21 single-player missions to complete which are in a wide varity of locations including building interiors, desert locations and snow covered bases. The missions themselves can include taking part in raids, providing VIP protection, recovering sensitive items and data, disarming bombs, rescuing hostages, and arresting the bad guys. Argonaut have also included 10 multi-player maps have also been included in the game so you and a friend can help each other through the levels. It is believed the game will also include some Deathmatch styled options althogh these, and the number of players, are still to be confirmed.

The weapons on offer in SWAT: Global Strike Team include a G36 Assault Rifle, SPAS 12 gague shotgun, WA2000 Sniper Rifle, PDW Submachine Gun, and a Mark 23 pistol. This should be enough to dispatch the enemies with but hopefully more weapons will be included in the final game. What the developers are promising is that as you progress and earn experience points you will be able to increase the magazine sizes of your weapons, the accuracy of your aiming and the type of bullets among other things. The gadets will also play an important role in the game with a gas mask, night vision goggles, concussion grenade, EMP grenade, CS Gas grenade and flashbang grenades on offer.

Graphically this game may looks a little on the plain side, and certainly the texturing could have been improved, however Argonaut are promising some neat features. Much like real life moving from inside darkness to outside sunlight will cause a few seconds of temporary blindness as your eyesight readjusts. The game, much like Sony's SOCOM: US Navy Seal's, allows you to enter commands to your squad through the logitech headset. As in Sony's game this should make commanding the squad much more fluid then using the controller to issue commands (this is still possible for those without headsets).

Overall, SWAT: Global Strike Team is shaping up as a nice title. The only disappointment is the lack of online gameplay which this game seems perfectly suited for, particularly considering the game already included several multi-player maps. Still, as an action title this is one game worth keeping an eye on.
