Attacking the Enterprise!
Everybody who knows me knows just how much I love Star Trek. I love all of them - The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and especially The Original Series with WIlliam Shatner and co. I have been watching them as far back as I can remember. As a result, any Star Trek game that is about to be released gets a good looking over by myself, and Star Trek: Shattered Universe from TDK Mediactive, is no exception. Actually, it's somewhat fortunate that the game is even coming out after Interplay's virtual demise, and the canning of the project before being picked up by another developer and publisher.

3rd person space combat.
The story for Star Trek: Shattered Universe is as follows;
In the time frame immediately following Star Trek VI (which has just been released as a brilliant 2-disc special edition on DVD), Captain Sulu and the crew of the USS Excelsior fight for their survival when they are thrust into a dangerous "Mirror" universe. This is a high-intensity space combat action as you pilot agile single-pilot fighters in a bizarre and twisted universe where the Federation is an evil, power-hungry Empire and the Prime Directive is "Dominate and Crush!". A hunted ship, the Excelsior and her new compliment of one-man fighters will battle former friends and foes alike in a changed reality where everything once familiar has now become a dark reflection of its true self. Their only hope of escape lies at the end of a perilous journey across a hostile galaxy.

Some nice visual effects.
Star Trek: Shattered Universe is a massive single-player campaign which is made up of 19 unique and varied missions. You will pilot newly created agile single pilot fighters including Federation fighters, the Klingon Bird of Prey, as well as Vulcan, Romulan and Tholian fighters. During the game you will encounter well known "Star Trek" races such as the Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans, Tholians, and Gorns, plus the newly created Shakurians, each of whom can either help or hinder the Excelsior from reaching it's ultimate goal.

Perpare for action!
During the game you must engage enemies in a wide variety of unique space environments including asteroid belts, comet tails, ship junkyard, debris fields, nebulas, and more. Each battle can takes place in a 3rd person perspective with an informative HUD giving you all the combat details such as shields and weapons. During the game you will also form alliances with former enemies to obtain new fighters and ship upgrades including improved shields, advanced phasers, heavy photons cannons, and other exotic weaponry. The game also ties in with the original television series as you will encounter legendary creatures and entities including the Doomsday Machine, the Guardian of Forever and Commander Balok. Unfortunately the only voices of the main cast being used to any extent are Walter Koenig and George Takei, Chekov and Sulu.

Star Trek: Shattered Universe was originally scheduled for release way back in 2001 before being placed in limbo. Although the game looked great two years ago it certainly looks a little dated now, but it still has the hallmarks of one of the best Star Trek games to date (which admittedly, isn't too hard). Take Two will be distributing Star Trek: Shattered Universe in March 2004. Star Trek, and action game, fans should be very happy.
