Look, it's Nirvana.
When the first SingStar was released in May 2004 it heralded an entirely new genre and brought one of the world's greatest pasttimes, singing, to millions of gamers the world over. In fact the series has shifted over 3.6 million copies to PAL territories already! With each new pack Sony has not only provided 30 new songs but also a series of new game modes, which also allowed the older songs to be imported into as well. Past titles have been a mixture of pop, rock, reggae and, well, pretty much every other modern genre. This ensured that everyone found some songs to enjoy, but rarely the majority. Now, Sony are set to release SingStar Rocks, a game which concentrates on the rock genre.

Is that Ski! (another inside Joke).
For those of you who are unaware the SingStar series is Sony's very impressive spin on your typical karaoke. Rather then having to go to some smoke filled bar this game allows you to play in the comfort of your own lounge room, and even provides two USB microphones to use with the game.

Playing with one player.
Unlike normal karaoke where you only get the lyrics on screen this game also shows you via bars on the screen what pitch you should be singing at, and with a small marker, what pitch you are currently singing at. It works remarkably well and at the end of your song you receive a score so there is no debate with your friends who is the best singer! It's also possible to set up battles between two players, or tournament styled events for up to 4 players at a time (possibly 8, but this is to be confirmed still).

Franz Ferdinand's song.
SingStar Rocks is still under wraps at this stage, but we can be sure that the game will include plenty of multi-player game modes. Naturally the rapping section probably won't make an appearance, but you can expect plenty of battles, and passing the mic's as seen in previous titles in the series.

As with each SingStar pack the most important aspect is the tracklist, and as I've mentioned this game focuses on rock music. The list includes the liked of Powderfinger, Nirvana, INXS, Deep Purple, Coldplay and Rolling Stones to name a few. There's no doubt that this is an impressive list, and each song will include the original video clip playing the background. The tracks in SingStar Rocks includes:

GANGgajang - Sounds Of Then (This Is Australia)
The Killers - Somebody Told Me
Bowling For Soup - 1985
The Church - Unguarded Moment
INXS - Never Tear Us Apart
Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back In Town
Hole - Celebrity Skin
The Veronicas - 4ever
Grinspoon - Hard Act To Follow
Stereophonics - Dakota
Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
Powderfinger - These Days
Killing Heidi - I Am
Scorpions - Wind Of Change
Nirvana - Come As You Are
Powderfinger - (Baby Iíve Got You) On My Mind
Men At Work - Down Under
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
The Swingers - Counting The Beat
The Screaming Jets - Better
Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
Coldplay - Speed Of Sound
The Exponents - Why Does Love Do This To Me?
Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For
Dragon - April Sun In Cuba
The Offspring - Self Esteem
Blur - Song 2
The Cardigans - My Favourite Game
End of Fashion - Oh Yeah
Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To?

It's fantastic to finally see Sony listen to the cries for packs which contain genres of songs, rather then a mix of everything. Sure it may sell in slightly less numbers but it should provide a better overall experience. As with previous releases there will be two flavours, one for $99.95 for those needing the microphones, or $49.95 for the standalone software. Expect an Australian release in late April.
