SCAR actually looks nice.
Does anyone here remember a PC game from the mid-1990's called Screamer? No? Well it was a fantastic arcade racing game that had me hooked for months. What does that have to do with this game? Well it's the same developer, Milestone, an Italian based company that in recent times has been keeping pretty quiet since their Supercross titles for Electronic Arts a couple of years ago. The company is about to hit back however with Squadra Corse Alfa Romeo, or SCAR for short, a racing game which concentrates on Alfa Romeo's.

Losing control.
The developers of this game have taken a unique perspective by stating that "players must improve their skills as drivers instead of modifying their cars, making the ability to match a set of skills to the different requirements of each competition just as much an important part of winning the race." An interesting perspective. The developers are also promising that the AI competitors will be based on a combination of skills and features making for unique opponents. The nine different abiliteis include a drivers health capacity, vision, intimidation, handling, acceleration, focus, anticipation and endurance. Time will tell if these actually make a real difference to the game.

Cars look pretty sweet.
In addition to choosing their favourite Alfa Romeo, players will be given the opportunity to choose their own race gear which will best improve their performance, as well as tune the levels of each of their different skills which will include: reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and their ability to cope with the stress of racing high speed circuits. Another unique skill is the Tiger Effect, which will give drivers the ability to turn back time and correct any potentially dangerous. As with most racing games the career mode will keep you busy for a while and in SCAR gamers can play through 10-12 years with 4-6 events per year.

A variety of different courses means that players will have the chance to compete on both race and street circuits across exotic Italian locales which range form the Tuscany hills to the Naples seaside, or battling it out in the streets of Florence and Milan.

Check out the motion blur.
Graphics look nice enough, certianly not up there with Gran Turismo 4 but solid enough while the music is 100% Italian style remixes of the original Ennio Morricone songs. Perhaps more exciting is that the developers have recorded the sounds from the actual cars to include in the game.

This game is never going to get anywhere near as much press as the big racing games but in all honestly it doesn't look too bad at all. The graphics are pretty good, the developers have a long history of racing games and the gameplay should be interesting. The only question remains. How many people are going to be interested in a game based on Alfa Romeo's, even at $69.95?
