Jack Sparrow is superbly modeled.
When Disney announced years ago they were making a movie based on a ride at one of their theme parks people thought they had gone crazy. How do you turn a ride into a 2 hour plus movie? Well they did. In fact, the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl ran for almost 2 1/2 hours, but importantly it was one of the most loved movies of the American Summer of 2003 with worldwide grosses in excess of $US650 million. Three years on and two sequels have been shot back to back for release in July 2006 and July 2007. Ubisoft have a game ready for release as well, but it's not quite what you think.

In fact Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow isn't based on the movie sequels, nor the original, but rather takes inspiration from the original movie to weave a tale of Jack Sparrow's life. Did he really sack Nassau Port without firing a shot or ride away from a deserted isle on the back of sea turtles? Now you’ll find out, firsthand!

Fighting with Elizabeth Swann.
This game takes place across a dozen locations including a variety of lush, immersive settings, including burning buildings, wrecked ships, and misty moonlit caves. In terms of gameplay there is plenty of variety. One minute you are fighting hordes of your enemies, while the next you’re evading capture by the Royal Navy. You learn new moves and combos as the game progresses, allowing even more spectacular and deadly attacks during combat.

As with the movies you can expect plenty of surprises. Hidden passages, special coins, and other secrets await! Discover gold and treasure to purchase upgrades for advanced moves and special abilities. Indeed as you progress you'll be rewarded with new swords that allow more advanced combos to defeat a wide range of deadly foes.

Battle in the far East.
Impressively the developers are also including a 2-player co-op mode so you can take on the challenge with a friend and play side-by-side as Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, or Elizabeth Swann.

POTC: The Legend of Jack Sparrow's presentation looks nice, if a little sparse. All the main characters from the movie including Johnny Depp, Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom have been realistically re-created for the game while Johnny Depp is also lending his voice to the game for authenticity which should provide more then a few laughs on occasion.

Level detail is, ermm, adequate.
Californian developers 7 Studios are a company showing improvements in each of their games with every new release. After starting out on the PS2 with Defender and Legion: The Legend of Excalibur a couple of years ago their most recent title, Fantastic 4 for Activision, was a very solid movie based license that, as is our concern with this game, just lacked the technical polish to push it up a level or two. With this title using the world created in the Gore Verbinski movies, but with an original storyline, this game has the potential to be a great companion to the upcoming movies. Expect a mid-July release.
