Off with their heads...
It's so sad to think that a game such as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which sold 2 million copies across all platforms, could still be outsold by drivel like Enter The Matrix. It's even worse when you think that many of those sales are from bundles including the game and even more distressing when you think how many Game of the Year and Platform Game of the Year awards it won worldwide. Fortunately UbiSoft's title, which, incidentally received Game of the Year here on Future Gamez, is coming back for the sequel which looks bigger, darker and even more exciting. Prepare for Prince of Persia Warrior Within.

Damn, he's big.
The story begins a few years after the conclusion of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The Prince has returned home to Babylon, to find himself hunted by a supernatural creature bent on his destruction. Forced to live a life on the run, he seeks counsel from an old mystic, who explains that his actions have spawned an immortal incarnation of Fate, known as the Dahaka. In his quest to save the Sultan’s palace from destruction, the Prince created a rift in the Timeline.

Hunted by the Dahaka, the Prince embarks upon a path of both carnage and mystery to defy his preordained death. He quickly comes to realize that there’s only one possible way to stay alive: journey to the birthplace of the Sands of Time, find a way to travel back into the past, and stop the Sands from being created. Without the Sands, the Prince’s last adventure will not occur – and the Dahaka will vanish. His journey leads him to the infernal core of a cursed island stronghold harboring mankind’s greatest fears.

Puzzle elements return.
The Prince has matured immeasurably since his courageous fight in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. He returns here with deadlier skills, a darker heart and a craving for battle. One of the major changes to this game is the all new free-form fighting system: An intricate new combat system lets you wage battles with no boundaries. Manipulate the environment and the enemies themselves to develop your own unique fighting style. Plus, an all-new projectile attack system allows for a variety of ranged combat tactics. Ravage enemies with the devastating new combative powers of the Sands of Time, opening up astounding variations in fighting gameplay.

Weapons will play a major part in Prince of Persia Warrior Within. The game includes five different classes of weapon, with 63 weapons in total across the five classes. These classes include swords, axes, maces, daggers and fortune weapons. The prince can use two swords at a time, and to date Ubisoft has shown off 8 different swords available to the prince. Axes are slow but they inflict a lot of damage on enemies while maces are slow and deal regular damage, but push enemies back a lot. Daggers do little damage but come in great numbers and can only be thrown. Perhaps the most interesting weapon category is the fortune weapon. Fortune weapons include sticks and planks which can be picked up from broken objects. They are weak, but still enable two-handed combos. Additionally, one specific ‘special attack’ is linked to each class.

That's how you kill them!
In Prince of Persia Warrior Within, the player will be able to pick up any weapons from his fallen enemy. With 2 weapons he will be able to trigger more deadly attacks, like for instance the decapitations (which you can see in the first picture!). The player will also be able to throw his second weapon at any time on an enemy.

By using double weapon the Prince will also be able to accelerate the rhythm of his attacks and then become deadlier. But the secondary weapon is breakable. By using it too long or in very powerful attack, the secondary weapons will break and would not be usable anymore.

The textures are superb.
It's no secret that development of this game has been taking place since the first game hit the shelves. The screenshots released show a slightly darker and more menacing title while the texturing is possibly the best yet seen on the Playstation 2. What you can't see here is the animation. The prince moves, or should that be almost gracefully glides around the levels, but when he starts attacking it's deadly.

With a release penciled in for November 25, 2004 there is little doubt that this will be one of the hottest titles this Christmas which will be another bumper year for the Playstation 2 given that the Playstation 3 hasn't even been announced (many were expecting PS3 at E3 2004 which would have shifted focus away from the PS2). Prince of Persia Warrior Within will be excellent. Guaranteed.
