Nice face paint.
There is little doubt over the brilliance of Hideo Kojima and his Metal Gear Solid games. Indeed Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a brilliant title up there with the best of them. And now, as he did with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty he is reworking and enhancing the game to create a new package with even more features then the original. This is the end product Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. This enhanced version includes all-new game modes such as the long-awaited addition of online gameplay, new duel mode, different camera perspectives, a demo theater mode and the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake games.

That's gotta hurt!
For the first time in the history of the Metal Gear franchise, the game now provides an online gameplay environment. In the new "Online Mode", gamers can choose their mission and rules, including "Team Battle" and "Snake and Enemy" (one person becomes Snake and the other person blocks out his mission), and then fight it out online. This new mode also brings the classic Metal Gear Solid combat elements into online play, such as the "Close Quarters Combat (CQC)" proximity encounters, stealth and sniping.

"The addition of the online battle mode to Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence offers a wealth of new possibilities for Metal Gear Solid." said Hideo Kojima, corporate officer of Konami Corporation. "This game also contains the milestone game Metal Gear. I hope that through this title, gamers will be able to follow the route we have taken at Kojima Productions, and that they enjoy the flow of the story that runs through the series."

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence has also added the option of a Third Person View Camera for every stage of the game. This wider field of vision and complete freedom of movement brings an incredible sense of realism to the game. Gamers will have an easier time spotting enemies on-screen and preparing for their next stealth maneuver.

In the demo theatre.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence also contains the original versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake that were previously released only in Japan for the MSX2 game console. These titles, based on the concept of infiltrating the enemy base using stealth tactics, rather than eliminating all of your enemies, were an innovative take on the action genre, proposing an entirely new approach to gameplay. Interestingly these two titles are set after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3 and gamers will finally be able to fill in more of the events following those in Metal Gear Solid 3

No time for monkey-ing around!
If that's not enough new stages have also been added to the popular "Snake vs. Monkey" mode (staring Snake and the beloved Ape Escape monkeys). Players who complete the entire game will also unlock a variety of new modes, including "Duel Mode" (a mode that allows gamers to replay all boss battles), and "Demo Theater" (where gamers can alter Snake's face paint and camouflage, and view movies starring their own unique Snake character).

The Metal Gear Solid series has continued to evolve over time, from the original MGS to MGS Integral, MGS 2 Sons of Liberty to MGS 2 Substance, and now finally MGS 3 Snake Eater to MGS 3 Subsistence. The additions to this game seem quite large and the addition of online gameplay alone should make it a worthwhile purchase. Although the American version was released in early 2006 (to rave reviews we may add) PAL gamers will be waiting until October 2006 before they get their hands on this - but you know it will be worth it.
