Battle in Vietnam!
While Acclaim is sadly long gone the remnants are only now starting to show with games being completed and finally hitting the shelves. Made Man is one such game - although little was known about it before Acclaim's demise other then a brief announcement. The good news is that a large number of the team that were working on this title at Acclaim Manchester went on to form Silverback Studios Limited and secured the rights to complete the title. Originally called Interview with a Made Man, and since shortened, the game aims to replicate the lifestyle of those in the Mafia - and there are some impressive facets to the game including the assistance of senior member of the Bonanno crime family.

Ohh guns, guns, guns.
Made Man is a third person action adventure that follows Joey Verola as he is indoctrinated into, and progresses through, the hierarchy of the most notorious crime organization in history; the Mafia. Joey never had it made. The son of an Italian immigrant, Joey had dreams. He was going to college, he was going to be somebody. Instead, to avenge his brother’s death he enlisted and went to Vietnam. There he saved the life of ‘Eggs’ Biondo. In Saigon, Joey and Eggs snuck into the base mortuary and what they saw there changed their lives forever. Upon returning to New York, Biondo introduced Joey to the incredible world of organized crime. Joey did it all as he shot his way to power in the mob. He became trusted, loved and feared. And when he learned the secret of the Vietnam coffin, he finally had it made.

The games storyline actually spans three decades of his life, from the horror of Vietnam to the urban jungle of Brooklyn, but it avoids the clichéd chronological constraints of many other games. Made Man has a very strong plot, with the missions written by best selling authority on the Mafia, David Fisher. David’s collaboration with retired Mafia caporigieme Bill Bonanno, a senior member of the Bonanno crime family, has ensured that each career step and mission is based upon authentic Mafia incidents.

Hanging around the docklands.
So what's so special about this game. Well it's a third person action title with Joey able to wield duel weapons and duck behind most of the game world objects to avoid enemy fire. A picture-in-picture mode give players the awareness of events going on elsewhere in the environment and enhances the player's experience with dramatic stylization. Melee weapons allow for bar room brawling style hand-to-hand combat, geared to downright thuggery. Using stealth, players can get up close and personal and perform 'Stealth Kills' on unsuspecting enemies.

Made Man takes place in 17 different environments from the jungles of Vietnam to the cities of New York and in a range of decade including the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's with a variety of licensed music tracks to accompany each era. Exact tracks haven't been announced as yet.

Hmm, kinda surrounded.
Comparisons to Electronic Arts' The Godfather are inevitible however while that game is based on a fictional movie this game is based on real-life events. Will it be better then EA's mediocre title? Time will tell, but Made Man has an interesting premise, fairly impressive - although not earth shattering - graphics and a wide variety of locations from the jungles of Vietnam to the busiest of cities. Hopefully the gameplay will also hold up fairly well. There's not too much longer to wait with the game currently due out in November/December at which point we hope to bring you a full review of the game - and see if there really was anything worth saving from the ashes of Acclaim.
