Now that's a great enemy.

Time: one year ago. The place: E3 2004. The surprise: Sony announce a new action game, God of War. The game has taken heavy inspiration from ancient Greek mythology. God of War brings to life the brutality and violence of the ancient Greek myths. During the game you will battle giant Cyclops, fearsome Minotaurs, and the deadly Medusa while navigating through war-torn Athens in search of Pandora’s Box.

Kratos is just hanging around.
Once a soldier in the Spartan army, Kratos has been possessed by Ares, God of War, thus becoming the most vicious and infamous warrior in Ancient Greece. Now, driven to the very edge of madness, he is determined to escape his fate. The only way to be released from his servitude is to kill Ares; but to kill a god is no easy task - if he is to succeed he must first find Pandora's Box. Unfortunately for Kratos, the fabled casket is hidden deep within a temple, guarded by traps, puzzles and countless enemies from this world and the next...

Time to balance...
God of War includes a huge variety of moves: climb mountains, traverse ropes (as you can see in the top picture), leap across chasms, explore submerged ruins, all while fighting an unrelenting tide of enemies. In fact, God of War delivers an extensive combat system based on uniquely linking combos for a myriad of fighting moves. Kratos' main weapons are two blades one attached to each arm by a long chain that wraps around his arm. This allows for both short-range and long-range attacks. Take the combat in air, take out a number of enemies at once, and utilize "context sensitive moves" moves that in particular situations, allow you to grab, kick or throw an enemy. Not enough, well the game also includes a magic system grants the power of gods and monsters: use Medusa’s head to freeze your enemies, strike them with Zeus’ thunderbolt, cut them down with Ares’ blades. The gameplay should be varied enough as you combine raw melee combat with traps, stunts, and story driven puzzles.

There's some nice graphics.
It feels like an eternity waiting for this game in PAL territories, but by got it should be worth it. The game was released in America almost six months ago now and the conversion to PAL has certainly taken its time but from all reports the port is as superb as this game deserves. Those of you who enjoyed the Twisted Metal franchise may be interested to note that the director of those games is responsible for God of War.

Expect an Australian release on June 23rd. Pencil it in for launch day or pre-order as you can rest assured this game will sell like hotcakes.
