The game has fantastic backdrops.
Several years ago PC gamers were treated to a great RTS (Real Time Strategy) game from Westwood called Dune, which was based on the book written in 1965 by Frank Herbert. This book is so popular that it has been made into both movies and a TV series. When Cryo announced they were porting Dune to the Playstation 2 a couple of weeks ago many believed it to be a re-make, or direct port, of Westwood's classic game, but it's not. In recent weeks Cryo have announced more details about the game that is actually an original action adventure based on the legendary story. For those of you who are unaware the storyline of the classic book is as follows;

Buildings have a gritty look.
In the year 10,191 (that's not a misprint) the Houses Atreides and Harkonnen are fighting a bloody battle for control of the barren desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. Jessica, the Duke's concubine, and Paul, his son and heir to the throne, are the only members of the Atreides family who survived the massacre organized by Baron Harkonnen, with the covert assistance of the ruling Emperor.

During the two years you will spend among the Fremen as Paul, you must earn their trust and demonstrate your strength and courage in order to become their long-prophesied messiah, Muad'Dib. As their saviour, free the Fremen from the hardships of the desolate conditions on the planet they call home.

Now that's a nice lens flare.
Explore Dune, learn the Weirding Ways to fight the Sardaukars, harass the Harkonnens, sabotage their Spice factories, learn the secrets of the giant sand worms and use the mysterious substance, known as Spice, to gain power and to foresee enemy positions. You must become a master in the art of infiltration and strike the enemy when they least expect it, as you prepare the Fremen for the final assault... their ultimate battle for Independence. This sounds like being one very enthralling game indeed. While the storyline is commonly known the graphics look equal to the task.

Preparing to inflict some pain.
Dune is a 3D game of infiltration, action and adventure. As you can tell from the surrounding screenshots the developers have put a lot of effort into the graphics to perfectly represent the world imagined in the book. The game is littered with wonderful texturing and lighting and the players look suitably detailed. It will be interesting to see how well the game runs under the Playstation 2's chipset compared to the PC version which is also in development.

Dune is the first 3D real-time action-adventure game based on "Frank Herbert's Dune" science fiction masterpiece mini-series on TV. The story should provide enough twists and turns to keep the game moving and while it remains to be seen just how well this title will actually play, it certainly looks the part. Expect Dune to hit the shelves in early February.
