Dante gets some pole action.
The first Devil May Cry was a fantastic game. It was hardcore action at it's best with unrelenting enemies and absolutely sensational gameplay. Unfortunately Devil May Cry 2 was a major disappointment - probably one of the biggest in the history of the PS2. Fortunately Capcom redeemed themselves with Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening - a game which brought the series back to its hardcore action roots. Now, rather then just release a cheap Platinum version Capcom are adding in some more features - in a similar way in which Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition was upgraded for it's budget release. Dante Vs Vergil.
Several thousand years have passed since the demon warrior Sparda raised his sword against the unholy world to save the human race. Victorious and assured that evil forces had been confined, Sparda joined mankind and fathered Dante, a half human-half demon son infused with the power of a supernatural lineage. However, Dante was not the only son Sparda had sired. As devoted as Dante was to defeating the forces of evil, his twin brother, Virgil, was consumed by power and upheld the legacy of his sinister ancestors. One moonlit night, a mysterious tower materialized beside Dante's "Devil May Cry" investigative agency. On the rooftop stood his brother along with his inhuman minions goading Dante into a confrontation.

This boss fight is spectacular.
One of the key changes in Devil May Cry 3 was the different styles of gameplay which you can select including short-range, long-range, defensive or evasive styles. Not only are there different styles but you will be able to combine them and instantly switch between weapons for greater effect. In fact Dante can now be able to carry up to four weapons at a time including handguns, shotguns, swords, and an all new deadly guitar. Once again the game will feature orbs to be collected which are used to upgrade weapons and health.

Virgil and Arkham...
Graphically, while the second game used a modified version of the engine from the first Devil May Cry, this third game uses an entirely new engine built from scratch. The detail is quite amazing, the texturing is superb and the effects stunning. For me, however it's the enemies that make this game special. Their design is stunning. Some of the enemies tower over Dante while at other times the screen is literally filled with demonic enemies to be dispatch post haste. Even Dante looks refreshing as he appears as his younger self (this being a prequel it makes sense I guess!) The cut-scenes also deserve mention as they are made using the in-game graphics engine - but we can still expect some stunning CG in places. Capcom have placed short movies at the beginning and end of each level - a vast improvement then the odd movie in Devil May Cry 2.

As we previously mentioned this isn't simply a budget re-release of the original title. Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition includes a wealth of exclusive new features including the following:

  • New playable character – play as Dante’s evil twin brother, Vergil, with his own unique “Dark Slayer” fighting style.
  • New “Jester” enemy – previously featured only in cut scenes, Jester has been implemented as a new boss character
  • Turbo Option – this new feature boosts the game speed by 20%.

    The enemies are impressive.
    Two continue system options:
    • Original yellow orb system – use yellow orbs to restart from the last checkpoint.
    • New gold orb system – continue unlimited times and use gold orbs to resume from the same spot or replay from the last checkpoint if there are no gold orbs left.
  • Adjusted difficulty levels - offers more balanced gameplay as players choose from five options including a new Very Hard mode.
  • Bloody Palace Mode – Dante is pitted against an onslaught of enemies in this survival mode.
  • Movie Mode – Unlocked cut scenes can be viewed either one at a time or all in a row.

Even if you picked up the original release it looks like Capcom may be doing enough to warrant purchasing this upgraded re-release. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition will hit our shelves in early October.
