What makes a game a success? Is it the reviews it receives from the press? Is it the number of people that purchase and play the game worldwide? Is it the group of hardcore gamers that worship the game and build countless web sites? If this is the case then the Baldur's Gate games have been a phenomenal success. Reviews of the first two games were extremely positive while the two games have sold a whopping 3.5 million copies combined. Fortunately, Interplay has decided to develop a game based on the action RPG series on the Playstation 2. As Baldur's Game: Dark Alliance is that game and as it nears completion one thing is certain, this game will be huge.

Magic plays a big part in the game.
Development of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance began way back in January 2000 as soon as Snowblind Studio's received PS2 development kits from Sony. After a little over a years development it is clear that this game will be one of the biggest games on the Playstation 2 this year. The storyline is separate from the previos PC games so fans of the series will have a whole new experience with this PS2 game. The storyline in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance sounds perfect for an action RPG.

The game is very action based.
A great darkness has fallen over the port town of Baldur's Gate and the lands around. Thieves and brigands roam the countryside, and they have driven you and your family from your farmland home. On a desperate rush to seek safety within the walls of Baldur's Gate, your hopes are dashed when you and your family are ambushed on the road by a group of thieves... thieves who claim to have ridden from Baldur's Gate to find you. Scattered by the suddenness of the thieves' attack, you return to the scene of the ambush to find your sister has been abducted. You must find her... before whatever terrible plots involving her unfold.

The lighting routines are superb.
Once you arrive in Baldur's Gate, you find that you are all that stands in the way of one of the greatest threats ever to strike Baldur's Gate and the Sword Coast. From the streets of Baldur's Gate, to the wind-torn peaks of the Sunset Mountains, to a final showdown in the deadly Marsh of Chelimber, your quest to rescue your sister escalates into staving off a war that will drown the Sword Coast in blood. With monsters, magic, and plenty of twists this game has it all.

While it all sounds exciting, fortunately the graphics are equally impressive. The screenshots don't really do the game justice and hides much of the intricate detail. Video footage shows an exciting, graphically rich game with plenty of magic spells and special effects to keep any gamer happy. Hopefully the frame rate will hold up with the full screen anti aliasing implemented throughout the game.

Four of the great character models.
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance should be an awesome title when it finally hits the shelves late this year. This will certainly be one game to keep an eye on in the lead up to Christmas. With both Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty and Final Fantasy X pushed back until early 2002 here in Australia Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance should keep RPG fans happy during the wait. If you've never owned an action RPG then now is a good time to start. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance has a great storyline, awesome graphics and potentially great gameplay. This will be a "must have" game on Playstation 2, if the developers get everything right. History suggests they will.
