AUGUST 2010 NEWS
August 31, 2010
Playstation Move is likley to be the biggest change to the Playstation 3 since it launched, certainly in terms of new gameplay styles. As a much more accurate version of the Nintendo Wii controller, we take a look at the controller, the game and the options at retail for the launch.

Well according to reports doing the rounds Gran Turismo 5 will need an install of at least 250MB, but to get the best experience from the game rumours are that you'll need an install of 10GB! By the best we assume that means the fastest loading times which isn't a bad thing - but you better have plenty of HDD space!
Head on over to the Australian Classification site and on this page you will see a listing for Dragon Age Origins - Ultimate Edition which has been rated MA15+ with the consumer advice of "Strong Violence".
Well a little birdy has visited today, it's been a while since we saw him on our back patio. Anyway a little news. He chirped something about a certain racing game that won't be released on the same day as the rest of the world (November 3). No, we here in Australia will be waiting - but only until November 4! Phew...
Infestation isn't what you would call a triple-A title, however this B-grade movie is actually quite entertaining when you get into it. Icon Films have done a very decent job of transferring this movie to Blu-Ray too and we suggest you check it out.
August 29, 2010
Better get in quick as our Blu-Ray competition giving away 5 copies of The Descent: Part 2 closes midnight tomorrow (Monday) night. It's a decent movie with a decent transfer and you can enter the competition to win your copy right here (or on the link at the top of this page).
It appears that Sony Japan will unveil a new game in a couple of days. The page (available here) is called amimono and shows a mafia looking man knitting. We know. Strange. I guess it's possible, but we're not putting any money on a knitting game for the Playstation Move.
August 28, 2010
According to Sony's website inFamous 2 will support the Playstation Move. As yet Sony hasn't detailed what features the Move controller will support, however it's clear that Sony see the device as so much more then just a Party game controller.
Do you live in Denmark? Well if you do you may be disappointed to hear that Electronic Arts has canned the release of MMA in that country due to laws over energy drink advertising with brandings appearing in arenas and on fighters shorts. The game will be out in other countries around the world in a couple of months.
Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has won an injunction banning the sale of those PS3 USB hacks allowing you to install games onto the Hard Drive. The injunction runs until August 31st (that's Tuesday), by which time Sony Oz need to have convinced the courts the device is primarily for piracy. If they can't they'll be back on sale September 1st.
Well this will piss off PSPgo owners. Probably the biggest game this year, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, will not be available as a downloadable title, but only on USB. Sony really need to resolve this as while the PSPgo sales have sucked hairy balls since launch, there are still thousands of gamers that will now miss out (or perhaps "upgrade" to a proper PSP!).
August 27, 2010
Enslaved: Odyssey To The West is the latest game from Ninja Theory, the developers of Heavenly Sword. This all-new action adventure game is shaping up very well indeed and has plenty of potential. With an October release set here's a preview.

Rumours doing the rounds today are that ex-Midway and no WB Games sandbox game This is Vegas has been scrapped with development ceasing on the project. The game was rumoured to have already cost around $43 million, but apparently WB Games weren't prepared to pour more funds, and another 12 months, into the game to finish it.
Want to know why the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV was delayed 6 months from the PC version due this September. Apparently it comes down to working with the PS3's memory limits. Producer Hiromichi Tanaka stated that "The main reason was the memory. On the PC, they have enormous memory. For PS3, there's a restriction. They are adjusting the memory size and customising it; it took longer than we were expecting, but we're really working hard to bring it out as soon as possible." Hopefully the game will make it's March release date.
August 24, 2010
Ummm, OK.. what the?!? Deathspank was a pretty entertaining game released only a month ago and we recommend it, but guess what, wait until September 21st (in America at least) and you will be able to download the sequel called DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue which will apparently be 50% longer then the original and see . No word on the European date yet, but it won't be far off.
Remember that PS3 hack that allows you to "back up" your games to Hard Drive an play them off there. Well it is now being reported that Sony can track people using the device, and as a result may ban them from using the PSN to connect online. Don't say we didn't warn you.
Well the Microsoft Kinect camera control device is due out in November but one of it's biggest features, that being voice control, won't actually be available when the system launches. That's another feature binned from the device, at least for the short term. (Update: Apparently voice control will be available for English speakers, but not in other languages).
3D Dot Game Heroes pays homage back to the 8-bit RPG era with graphics to match. It looks and sound 1980's and plays a little better. Michael has done up his review and presents it here for your reading pleasure.
Well my new PC is ordered and I should have it in a week or two.. The old system is still chugging along, but it's crashing and some keys don't register sometimes. Still it will be nice to move forward a few generations of computer!
August 23, 2010
Lego Harry Potter is a game which I know a lot of you have been keen to get our impressions on. The Lego based video games are tremendous fun, and this latest title looks at the first four years at Hogwarts. It's a brilliant release for fans of either the Lego or Harry Potter franchises.
August 22, 2010
Don't forget that during August we are giving away 5 copies of The Descent: Part 2 on Blu-Ray. It's a decent movie with a decent transfer and you can enter the competition to win your copy right here (or on the link at the top of this page).
As some of you may have seen around the web in the last day or two a company (Who we won't name) has released a hack solution for the PS3 which allows you to copy a game to the Hard Drive and run it. If course this circumvents the PS3's security measures, and at the moment it only works with Firmware 3.21. For $AU170 it's an expensive prospect and we have to point out a few things. Firstly there is no guarantees it will work if you ever upgrade your firmware in future. Secondly it's possible that Sony will ban your PSN account in much the way Microsoft bans hacked consoles from Live. Finally do you know what has happened to the PC games industry? Yep it's dead on piracy, so let's not do the same to Sony.
Sega has confirmed that a demo for Vanquish will be released on the Playstation Store September 2nd.
Well I'll be ordering a new PC tomorrow with the following specs - Core i7 860 @ 2.8Ghz, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB SATA HDD, 1GB nVidia GT330 video card, 16x DVD Burner (will throw in a Blu-Ray drive later), Firewire, 19-1 card reader and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. That should get me going for a few more years (it has a 5 year NBD warranty too) at least and I hope to have the system in the next week or two. Fortunately I've resurrected my old PC - for now, so hopefully it will last for a while longer until the new machine arrives.
August 19, 2010
Thought we'd let you know that Play-Asia have a pretty damn good special going for James Bond: Quantum of Solace on PS3. You can buy the Asian version (in English and playable on all PS3's) for the next couple of days for only $AU14.46 (around $US13). If interested (and we think it's worth it at that price) click on this link to ensure Futuregamez gets a little commission too - it really helps us.
Well you may have to excuse a lack of updates over the next couple of days. I just upgraded my internet plan and got a new modem, installed it and Boom! There goes my computer to the ends of time. Indeed it's time to put the good old Athalon 2600 to rest I think and I'm going to pick up a new Core i5 or i7 in the next couple of days. I'll try to keep updating, but even right now the machine has crashed again (I hope this posts before it dies totally).
August 18, 2010
Well it's Gamescom on in Germany today and there have been a few announcements which we will summarise below. Enjoy...
- In probably the biggest surprise of the show Mass Effect 2, the critical and commercial hit RPG from Bioware, has been confirmed for release on the PS3 in January 2011. Just to clarify, the original game will not be released though as Microsoft own the rights to that specific game.
- Insomniac Games have confirmed Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, a 4-player online platform game, will be released in Q'3 2011. No word on split-screen yet but we have fingers crossed.
- Resistance 3 has been officially announced with a FMV trailer. No details have been announced about the game at all except that it's due out in 2011.
- An upgrade for PlayTV (which press had been mentioned as PlayTV 2) has been announced which will include the ability to send messages to friends while watching shows. Strangely, or perhaps disappointingly, Sony Australia have said the update will be available through the Playstation Store.
- Australian PS3 owners will notice a new TV service called PLUS7 which will allow you to catch up on TV shows screened on the 7 network. This will become available in late August.
- Sega has confirmed that Virtua Tennis 4 will be releaed on the PS3 next year. Not only will the game include support for Playstation Move which should be very cool, but will also include stereoscopic 3D support.
- Sony has confirmed that they will be releasing 160GB and 320GB PS3 units starting in mid September. These new larger capacity systems will slowly replace the older systems.
- Finally, Sony Europe has confirmed that Gran Turismo 5 will be released in that territory on November 3rd, a day after America. We expect Australia to also see the same release date.
One final bit of news closer to home. The Australian Classification Board has rated Call of Duty: Black Ops today awarding it a M rating with the advice "Violence, gaming experience may change online". This is a bit surprising as unless Activision have toned down the violence the game has achieved a lower rating then Modern Warfare 2 which was rated MA15+.
Solitary Man is the latest movie from Michael Douglas. We've all seen movies where people make it to the top of the business world, but what happens when everything starts to fall apart. This is a pretty decent movie and we've reviewed the Blu-Ray disc.
August 17, 2010
In what seems to be the trend of the last week or two we have now received reports that FEAR 3's release date has been pushed from late 2010 to 2011.
David Cage has confirmed that Heavy Rain has sold an impressive 1.5 million units, with the game far exceeding both his, and Sony's expectations. Given that the game will receive Playstation Move support in the coming months, and we're entering Christmas sales, David Cage, Sony and we here at Futuregamez would expect the games sales to surpass 2 million units. Impressive stuff...
F1 2010 is a big release for racing enthusiasts. We love our racing games and it has been a few years since the last Formula One game on consoles. What's changed? Well the series is now developed by Codemasters, who have developed Grid and Dirt in recent years, and we have high hopes for this release.
August 16, 2010
Extract is a somewhat dark comedy from the director of Office Space. Indeed this is a fairly entertaining movie with a strong cast, and impressive preformances. Here's a Blu-Ray review.
August 15, 2010
Bioshcok Infinite was a surprise announcement from 2K Games this month and was made all the more exciting as it is being developed by the same team at Irrational Games that developed the first smash-hit title. We have a couple of screens and a few details but with a 2012 release there is time for this to keep building to something very special indeed.
August 14, 2010
2K Games has announced the top secret Project Icarus game in development at Irrational Games is actually Bioshock Infinite. Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite introduces an entirely new narrative experience that lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky. BioShock Infinite is currently planned for release during calendar 2012.
id Software has confirmed that Rage, their new shooter, will be released in America on September 13th and in Europe on September 15th. Before you get too excited though you may want to know that the dates are in 2011, not 2010.
Crytek has confirmed that their upcoming shooter Crysis 2 will be released in America on March 22 2011, while Europeans will wait a couple more days with the game due out there on March 25, 2011.
August 12, 2010
Well we only previewed it a couple of days ago but Namco Bandai has today confirmed that Test Drive Unlimited 2 has been delayed until Q'1 2011.
Volition, the developers of Red Faction and Saint's Row, are apparently working on an all-new IP which, according to reports, may be a third person RPG, and may also be in conjunction with director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pans Labrynth). Expect more details one day, probably after Saint's Row 3 is released in a year or so.
Underbelly Uncut has been available on DVD for some time now but this brilliant, jaw-dropping TV series showing Melbourne's gangland war is out now on Blu-Ray, and it's quite a release. This is a series every fan of true crime will want to add to their collection.
August 11, 2010
Capcom Europe have announced they have brought the release of Dead Rising 2 forward a week in that territory to September 24th. The game will still be released in America and Japan on September 28 and September 30 respectively.
According to rumours doing the rounds on the web Gearbox have apparently picked up development duties on Duke Nukem Forever. The game had been in development hell for a decade before 3D Realms went bust in 2009. No one is talking, but we personally love the thought of Gearbox working on the title given the quality of their recent game Borderlands.
A couple of days ago reports surfaced on the internet that the Microsoft Kinect would be able to interpret sign language due to a patent filed with, well, whoever. Microsoft have since confirmed that the kinect system will not be able to do this. The reason? The final camera used in the Kinect is a much lower resolution then initial specs so it's not technically capable, but Microsoft have suggested it may be used in future technology.
Demon's Souls is probably the most hardcore game we've played in the last 5 years of gaming. It's ultra-hard, requiring a great amount of skill and patience. You'll die a lot, but this game is always engrossing and will have you hooked. Here's our review.
August 10, 2010
Voyage To The Planets was a Blu-Ray I was very happy to receive for reviewing. Running for over 5 hours this is a comprehensive 6-part documentary which looks at the possibility of humans flying to and living on each of the planets in our solar system. In short, brilliant.
August 9, 2010
Square-Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will not be shown at the upcoming gamescom show. That's the bad news, the good news is that the development team is currently in the process of voice casting for recording the voiceovers very soon. No word on a release date, but we're guessing late 2011 in Japan, with America and Europe later.
Test Drive Unlimited 2 is a game which PS3 owners will be keen to get their hands on given the previous title didn't come to Sony's (at the time) next-gen platform. With a release set for late September this Eden Games developed title is looking pretty impressive. We take a look and offer you some details of what to expect.
August 7, 2010
Amazon France has two interesting listings for PS3 at the moment. One for Splinter Cell Trilogy and the other for Prince of Persia Trilogy, both due for release in November. There is no confirmation, but if these are re-released on PS3 in HD much like the brilliant God of War Collection we'd be more then happy. Perhaps a Gamescon announcement incoming?
Activision UK has dated Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock for release on September 24th in that terriory. The Australian date should be pretty similar, but we'll let you know if/when we get confirmation.
Don't forget folks that Futuregamez is giving away 5 copies of The Descent: Part 2 on Blu-Ray. Check out the competition here and get enterting.
Swingers is one of those movies that doesn't really mean much until you actually see it. Despite being an ultra low-budget comedy from 1996, and one which could remain easily overlooked to this day, Swingers has gone on to become a classic primarily due to the two lead actors. Starring Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau this is now a cult comedy classic. Here's a review of the Blu-Ray...
August 5, 2010
In the biggest WTF moment of 2010 Activision has confirmed the release of a demo for Modern Warfare 2 through the Playstation Store. Yep, some 9 months after release, and after a bajillion sales, the company still felt the need to push more sales through a demo.
Those of you getting excited about the ModNation Racers 1.02 patch due today may want to hold off as it causes other issues. The official line "ModNation Racers: Update 1.02 introduced an issue that affects online XP Races & XP Series. We're working on a solution to resolve the issue."
August 4, 2010
Electronic Arts and Crytek have confirmed that Crysis 2 will not be released in Holiday 2010 (meaning pre-Christmas) but rather in Q'1 2011. The game is a hotly anticipated shooter, but also another key title in the uptake of 3D gaming - with the XBox 360 version also including a 3D mode.
Movie Industry News
Sadly it seems that the upcoming Uncharted movie will not make the expected 2011 release date after all after director David O. Russell could not come to an agreement with Sony over terms.
Lost Planet 2 is the a sequel to, well, Lost Planet. Lost Planet was a moderate success for Capcom and this sequel ups the ante in so many areas. Mike has played through the game and gives us his thoughts on this latest release.

Blu-Ray Review & Competition
The Descent: Part 2 is the sequel to the fantastic horror movie from a couple of years ago called, you guessed it, The Descent. Not only do we have a review of this Blu-Ray from Icon Films, and its a movie that fans of the original will want to check out, but we're giving away 5 copies of the disc as well. Check out the review, and our Competition page to enter.
Well it wasn't officially confirmed but PS3 Firmware 3.41 had a little flaw with those trying to upgrade the hard drive. Sony have fixed the issue, but kept the firmware at 3.41 - strange isn't it. Expect the issue to be resolved...
So you want to play the new NBA Jam on the PS3 (or 360)? Well Electronic Arts have confirmed the game will be included on the disc for NBA Elite 11 with no plans, at this stage, to release the game through the Playstation Store. You may also like to take not that the PS3 version is a cut-down version of the Wii title (essentially a glorified demo in other words - Dave).
One game that we loved and hated in equal measures was ModNation Racers. The gameplay was fun but when you spent more time at load screens then playing, well that just sucked. The good news though is that Sony are set to release a patch this week which will reduce load times by about half, but also add in casual AI (rather then the very cheaty catch-up AI included). Huzzah!
Sony has confirmed that God of War: Ghost of Sparta will be released on the PSP November 2nd in America. The game is being developed by Ready at Dawn. As yet there is no specific European/Australian date, but we expect it to be Sony's big PSP title for Christmas.
August 2, 2010
According to The Official Xbox Magazine Codemasters' new Operation Flashpoint game will be called Operation Flashpoint: Red River. We're pretty excited by this as, while it wasn't perfect, we did enjoy the slow pace of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising despite the technical deficiencies on PS3.
In another confirmation that Sony made the right choice with the PS3 Konami have confirmed that the upcoming Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will require 2 DVD's for the XBox 360 version (but only one Blu-Ray disc for PS3). Developers MercurySteam even had Microsoft's techs in looking at their compression, and there was nothing they could do to reduce the data space required.
SingStar Chart Hits is the latest game in Sony's long-running karaoke franchise. It has been a while since the latest release but with the recent patch adding online battles, PSP functions and vibrato effects this new disc (or indeed the old ones if you have them) is worth a look.
