AUGUST 2009 NEWS

August 31, 2009

    Rumours... or are they?
Well the bird seed worked. Our longtime friend the little bird dropped in with some juicy rumours today. Apparently some people don't like the PS3 Dual Shock 3 as a Blu-Ray remote. Apparently Sony are considering a drop on the official remote to $39.95 very soon. A certain singing game will see individual discs for $49.95 per release? Speaking of which, you can Take That, on October 22. Keen on Fat Princess? Well it may be blu-er soon...

More, we say, more... Well how about a certain Pet coming to PS3? Well rumours have it that in Australia this pet will only come with a camera, and not standalone - but apparently he'll be pretty cheap, only $AU79.95 for the bundle on October 29. What's that? More? Well a certain Sony franchise that was popular on the PS2 is back for a second outing on the PS3 and will hit shelves October 29.

What about the PSP? Well Birdie was still chirping about FW6.0 for PSP... some developers are already playing with it apparently. Oh and you can expect some ghost hunting on October 22 and a new special forces game in November... Go figure..

    Blu-Ray Review
The Longest Day is being released just in time for Fathers Day this weekend. This is a brilliant war movie which details the Allied invasion back into France. This is a must have 2-disc Blu-Ray release which includes not only a great movie, but some brilliant extras too.

    Industry News
One of the earliest games announced for the PS3 was one called Intersteller Marines which was being developed by Zero Point Software. Sadly the company filed for bankruptcy on July 6th and while they are looking for financing it isn't too hopeful at this stage. It seems that the game, which some have called vapourware due to the little that was seen, may never be released now.

    A visitor?
Apparently our friend, the little bird may be back very soon with some more rumours to get you excited... We've put out the bird seed and hope to see him soon!

    Blu-Ray Review
The International is a great little thriller starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. The film which follows two people looking to take down a bank offering more then finance around the globe. Here's our Blu-Ray review.

    Industry News
Some somewhat sad news to report today with DJ AM apparently dying from an overdose in New York on Friday. Who the hell is he you ask? Well besides being Nicole Richie's ex, and surviving a plane crash about a year ago, he is one of the main contributers to Activision's upcoming DJ Hero game. Being so close to release we don't expect any delays, but we'll keep an eye out. Our sympathies go our to DJ AM's family and friends.

    PS3 News
We all know that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is going to be a big title this year, and Activision are going all-out to hire the best to work on the game. The latest bit of jaw-dropping news is that Hans Zimmer has been confirmed as the composer. In case you don't know your composers he wrote the scores for Gladiator, The Lion King (for which he won the Academy Award), Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy and the two recent Batman movies.

The biggest selling title at the moment is Batman: Arkham Asylum (US Version) which they have for $AU78.86 (plus shipping) and is available here. Both EA's Madden NFL 10 (Asian Version) is available here for $60.63 as well as FIFA 10 at the same price which is is available here. Remember, by ordering from Futuregamez links you're helping me fund this site.

    PS3 News
It's another great week for demos on the Playstation Stores around the globe. Americans can get their hands on demos for WET (766MB), DiRT 2 (860MB), NHL 10 (860MB) and F.E.A.R. 2 (588 MB) the latter two which are also available in Europe. Also available in America is the game Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao (263MB) for $US14.99 which, we believe, includes support for 3D visuals via those red/green glasses. There's also a swag of extra content for many games so check it out.

In Europe and Australia we also get Smash Cars, Battle Tanks and Topatoi as downloadable games, and a price drop on Crash Commando as well as a tonne of add-ons.

    Competition
Don't forget to enter our competition to win one of four copies of the Blu-Ray release of The Queen. It's a great movie, and a great transfer so make sure you enter by going to our Competition Page. Entries close Friday September 28, 2009.

    PS3 News
Take it with a grain of salt for now, but with Sony's official pamphlet dating Gran Turismo 5 for a 2009 release we have now spotted a Dutch retailer with a release date of November 2nd. It may be a speculative date, but seems pretty definite. Check it out here.

Insomniac have announced via their Twitter page that Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time will be released in America on October 27, 2009. No word yet on the European date, but it won't be too far behind we hope.

August 26, 2009

    PS3 Review
Shatter is one of the best, and one of the cheapest downloadable titles on the Playstation Store. The game is a Breakout styled game, with plenty of additions and enhancements. Oh, did we also mention the awesome music in the game? Check out the review, but in short, just buy this great little game.

August 25, 2009

    PS3 News
Keen to get your hands on Bioware's upcoming RPG Dragon Age: Origins? Well you're not alone and the good news is that the game will be pretty long too with studio chief Ray Muzyka talking to VG247 and confirming it took him about 120 hours to complete the game to 90%. Good value in our book. Let's hope the quality is in the game and it's not just padded out.

    Movie Industry News
According to reports the Bioshock movie which was put on hold a while ago when the budget went too high with director Gore Verbinski on board has a new lease on life. Gore has moved onto another project called Rango, but now director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is apparently about to be signed to the project.

    Blu-Ray Review
Paul Blart: Mall Cop doesn't exactly have the most exciting sounding name for a movie, but with a worldwide gross of $US186 million, there are a lot of fans. From Adam Sandler's Happy Madison studio comes this comedy about a mall cop who gets stuck in a robbery. Painfully obvious, some may enjoy this more then we did.

    Competition
Don't forget to enter our competition to win one of four copies of the Blu-Ray release of The Queen. It's a great movie, and a great transfer so make sure you enter by going to our Competition Page. Entries close Friday September 28, 2009.

August 23, 2009

    PS3 News
Well nothing was confirmed at the recent Cologne game show, but apparently Sony pulled the announcement at the last minutes. Still press materials don't lie and a flyer from the show has listed Gran Turismo 5 for release on PS3 in Q'4 2009. Here's hoping there's an announcement at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in a few weeks.

Activision has confirmed that DJ Hero will be released in America on October 27, 2009 with the rest of the world also due at the end of October.

    PS3 Preview
Dragon Ball Raging Blast is the latest Dragon Ball game in a franchise that sees annual updates. This latest game certainly looks solid enough, but it's the range of characters and storyline that will have fans hooked. We've got the latest details and screenshots.

August 21, 2009

    PS3 News
Head on over to the Playstation Store today as it's a cracker of an update. Not only are there numerous videos of games presented at this weeks Gamescon in Cologne, but also demos of Dirt 2, WET, Mini Ninjas and IL2 Sturmovik: Birds Of Prey. When you get bored of that there's the usual extra tracks for Rock Band and other game add-ons. Check it out.

Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has confirmed that the game will be released in Europe in Spring 2010 (that's around Q'2 2010). The game, which is also coming to XBox 360 we must add, may also see a demo released at some stage, the content of which will be different to that in the Japanese demo.

    Industry News
Well here's some news for Australian gamers. Apparently Electronics Boutique (or EB Games depending what you want to call them) will not be selling the PSPgo, either online or at retail. There are been some speculation that retailers were a bit pissed at selling a console which gives no opportunity to sell software (the PSPgo is, of course, solely downloadable content). Now before you say that they may not have had time to list the console we must remind you that the system was announced at E3 2009 a couple of months ago, and they already have the PS3 Slim listed to purchase online. There goes one major retailer, will others follow?

    Blu-Ray Review
The Queen is a brilliant movie which won and was nominated for several Academy Awards. The movie is now available on Blu-Ray with a stunning DTS-HD audio track and impressive video transfer too. We've reviewed this release from Icon, so check it out now.

August 19, 2009

    PS3 News
Well today Sony unveiled the second worst secret of 2009 (the first being PSPGo), that being the PS3 Slim. The system will be technically the same as current systems, but around 35% smaller, lighter and less power consuming. It will, however, include a 120GB Hard Drive, but will drop support for other operating systems (such as Linux). The unit will go on sale for €299 (Europe markets), AUD$499.95 (Australia) and NZD$629.95 (New Zealand) and will hit shelves around the globe in the first week of September with America seeing the system (for $US299) on September 1st, with Europe, Australia and New Zealand on September 3rd. The system will become available in Japan on September 3, 2009, at a RRP of 29,980 yen (including tax).

In staying with the PS3, Sony has announced Firmware 3.00 will also launch on September 1st. The new Firmware adds a host of new features including Dynamic wallpapers and Themes, improved navigation including a What's New area to easily show off new content and additions, short cut to PlayStation Store from the game and video sections. Also promised is improved Friends Lists and (apparently, but not in the press release) improved Trophies which can be split into sub-categories under each game now.

There was still no news on the PlayTV which disappointed, but Sony did discuss the Video Delivery Service. This will allow you to buy or rent, in SD or HD, movies and TV shows. The service will launch in November 2009 in UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Spain. Sadly Australian's will be waiting until 2010 as confirmed by Sony Australia today.

For PS3 owners that don't have a credit card, there is good news with Sony announcing that Playstation Network Voucher Cards will be coming to Europe and Australia this year. The cards will be available in €20 or €50 values in Europe in September 2009 while Australia and New Zealand will see the cards (valued at $30/50) released by Christmas.

Sony has confirmed that the motion controller first seen at E3 this year will be shown off in detail at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show.

Electronic Arts has confirmed that Battlefield Bad Company 2 will be released in America on March 2, 2010 and in Europe on March 5th.

Oh, here's something cool we no longer have to call the system a PLAYSTATION 3, but can now just called it a Playstation 3. Cool... Perhaps if someone had told us we still wouldn't have shouted it anyway!

    PSP News
Well there was a little bit of a surprise from Cologne on the PSP front. Anyone purchasing the PSPGo between October 1 to October 10 will be able to - for those dates only - download the full version of Gran Turismo PSP for free. That's not a tech demo or sample of the game, but the entire product. Great value. Strangely there was still no mention of porting, or re-downloading PSP games onto the UMD-less unit.

Sony has confirmed that there will be a renewed push on the Playstation Store with "mini" games which come in at under 100MB. There will be "minis" on October 1 when the PSPGo launches, and reportedly 50 by the end of the year.

    PS3 News
Only a couple more hours until Sony hold their presentation in Cologne. PSPGo, PS3 Slim, Video Store, PlayTV, New Games.. What will be shown, we'll be back tomorrow with all the news so stay tuned.

    PS3 Preview
God Of War III is probably one of the most anticipated titles on the PS3. This third game is scheduled for release in March next year. We've taken a look and give you some of the latest screenshots and details on what will certainly be an epic finale to the franchise.

August 17, 2009

    PS3 News
Some not so good news for Sony fans with Ubisoft's UK website listing I Am Alive for release on the PC and XBox 360. It could be a simple error, but it could also mean the PS3 version has been scrapped - and with a release date rumoured to be pushed to 2011 it hints there may have been some development heartache. You can see the link here.

Valve's Gabe Newell has re-confirmed that Valve is not doing any active development on the PS3 at this stage.

Electronic Arts has confirmed that Army of Two: The 40th Day will be released on January 12, 2010 in North America and January 8, 2010 in Europe (with Australia likely to be close to the European date). The game is scheduled to be released PS3, Xbox 360 and PSP.

    PS3 Preview
Wolfenstein is a game franchise as entrenched in gaming psyche as Doom and Quake. Some seventeen years on from that first game on the PC we now have an all-new version for the PS3. It looks very impressive too... Here's a very last minute preview with the game due out next week!

August 16, 2009

    The bird returns...
Hey the little birdie has returned and wanted to talk about the PSPGo. As we all know the system is pretty pricey, certainly more expensive then the current system with little different except the removal of the UMD drive and inclusion of some RAM. The big question has been what will happen with current UMD discs. Well birdie has some rumours that may be of interest. It seems that connections are changing - there won't be the same AV out as on the PSP Slim, it will be a custom connection. Of course that's old news, and I let him know it.

Well how about this then. How about the ability to get download codes for five of your currently owned UMD games so you can download them for free for use on the PSPGo! Well that's one scenario Sony is planning and would be welcomed (and perhaps help justify the $AU449 price point), but what about if you have more games? Could there be discounts for those that have more games on PSP UMD already? Time will tell... Sadly it seems there is no way to link up your old PSP to the PSPGo via USB to transfer the games...

    Chirp chirp.

Chip... Firmware 5.70... Chirp.. Pfft... What's that? Expect another very soon after launch! Time to go get a 6-pack!

August 15, 2009

    PS3 News
Sony and Zipper Interactive have confirmed that MAG - the 256 player online game - will be released in America on January 26, 2010. We had already heard that the Australian and European version wouldn't make it this year, but that is now a certainty.

A visit from an old friend...
Well the little bird did drop in today, a little later then we hoped due to a couple of extra drinks on the way in and the need to re-verify some little details through some friends. Anyway from what we here there is a certain system that is going to be on a diet and will come out thinner then usual. We hear that an announcement will be made in the next couple of days, but those that want to save some money would likely want to hold off on a trip to the shops until September 2nd or 3rd. It's also possibly that this system will retail for $AU499, and a 120GB HDD is likely, although larger is possible, but the powers that be are still deciding.

That's not all though! This little birdie had to go get some more bird seed, but has promised some more big news on another system in the next 24 hours so stay tuned.

August 13, 2009

    PS3 News
Naughty Dog has confirmed that there will not be a single player demo for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. As Even Wells points out it takes some time to learn all the moves in the game, and trying to condense that into 15 minutes is near impossible.

    Industry News
In somewhat sad news Swedish developers GRIN have shut their doors. The company has struggled of late with horrendous sales of Bionic Commando for Capcom, and poor reviews of Terminator Salvation. Where this gets sad though is knowing that the company does have talent as they also developed the quite brilliant PC version of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.

    Return of an old friend...
We've heard it on the grapevine that an old friend of ours may be returning in the next day or so with some big news. Some of you may remember the little birdie... well apparently he might be making an appearance soon with some, well, juicy news...

    Blu-Ray Review
The Butterfly Effect 3 is, somewhat obviously, the third movie in this popular franchise. The movie is direct to Blu-Ray and has just hit shelves across the nation. We've checked out this disc and the result is a movie that is better then the second in the franchise, but not as good as the first. Still, this is worth a look for fans.

August 12, 2009

    PS3 News
According to reports the upcoming Gamescon show at Cologne may eb showing off more then the PS3 slim with word getting out (and now confirmed by Sony) that more details on teh Playstation 3's downloadable movie service for Europe will be announced. Nothing has been heard of the service since the Leipzig show in 2008 and it will be welcome news.

Deep Silver has announced that they will be publishing a game on the now-finished TV series Prison Break. We personally loved the TV series, so the game is most welcome. The game is currently being developed by Zootfly and centers around Company agent Tom Paxton who is sent into Fox River State Penitentiary to find out why Michael Scofield became a bank robber. Sadly there's no word yet if the TV stars will reprise their roles for the game.

    Blu-Ray Review
New In Town is a movie that will have the female readers (yes, all three of you!) sitting up and taking notice. Released today New in Town is an interesting movie which offers little new, but will find fans due to the lead actors Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr.

August 11, 2009

    PS3 News
Namco Bandai has confirmed that Tekken 6 will be released in Japan on October 27, America on October 29 and in Europe on October 30. We assume that the Australian release date will be in line with that of Europe.

    PS3 Review
Fuel is an open-world racer which has been out for a few weeks now, but Michael has taken his time to have a good look at this racer which caters for up to 16-players online. The end result is a game which is somewhat disappointing overall.

    PS3 News
Those of you looking at buying the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition may want to know that the box set (which includes Fully-functional, wearable Night Vision Goggles, Limited Edition numbered stand, Modern Warfare 2 Hardened Edition - which includes a coupon to download the original Call of Duty in HD) will be released in limited quantities with no more being made after the initial run. Pre-orders in America are moving fast with retailers already asking for, and being denied, additional stock. We've got ours orders as the bundle, at $AU199, is brilliant value. You can check it out here.

    Blu-Ray Review
The Last Word is a rather dark comedy which stars Wes Bentley, Winona Ryder and Ray Romano which has come straight to Blu-Ray. We didn't mind this offbeat movie which looks at a man who writes suicide notes for people falling in love with the sister of a deceased client. Read on...

    Release Schedule & Affiliate Change
Well we've spent a bit of time tonight working through the PS3 Preview and Release Schedule page with a tonne up updated dates and additions. You may also like to know that we have changed the affiliate links to now point to Play-Asia who, with such a strong dollar at the moment, offers some great prices. You will still be able to access Australian retailer GamesWarehouse on the preview and review pages.

August 9, 2009

    PS3 News
So, wanting a PS3 Slim? Well according to a couple of people we have spoken to there is something happening. There has been talk of the unit being officially unveiled at Gamescon in Cologne, Germany which takes place from August 19. The second thing is that we've heard from several Australian retailers that they have either run our or are running out of current PS3 units with the next shipment due on September 3rd - conveniently a couple of weeks after Gamescon and there, apparently, won't be any game bundled in with the system. Make of it what you will, but we're putting money on PS3 Slimline.

    Movie Industry News
So this is some pretty big news. Remember when Peter "Lord of the Rings" Jackson was set to produce a Halo based movie, but it fell through due to funding? Well it is now being reported that the movie may once again be back on track with a new producer on board. Can't be as good as Peter Jackson you ask? Well, how about Steven Spielberg. Seems like he's very keen on the property now...

August 8, 2009

    PS3 News
Sony has released a patch for Fat Princess in America which fixes a disconnect issue which many gamers were having when playing online. The patch is due out in Europe this week.

Bioware has confirmed that Dragon Age: Origins will not be released on October 20 as expected, but instead has been pushed back to November 3 in North America and November 6 in Europe for PC and XBox 360 and an unspecified November release for the PS3. The RPG, which will be published by EA Games, is highly anticipated.

    Industry News
Atomic Games, who were working on Six Days in Fallujah (the game that was picked up by Konami and then dropped following an outcry about the content of the current Iraq War), has sadly almost closed down. Apparently all but a dozen or so staff have been let go and with the game languishing without a publisher it's unlikely the company can be saved.

August 7, 2009

    PS3 News
Activision has confirmed that Guitar Hero: Van Halen will not be released in Europe (and we expect Australia) until early 2010. The game had been rumoured for a December 2009 release here - a date which is still valid for America.

August 5, 2009

    PS3 News
Sega has confirmed that the Rebellion developed Alien Vs Predator game will be released in February 2010. The game certainly looks impressive so we'll be keen to check it out then.

Electronic Arts' John Riccitiello has confirmed the company is still working on more games in the Medal of Honor franchise. As yet no platforms, dates, or details beyond that are known, but don't expect anything this year that's for sure.

    PS3 News
Sony has unveiled a plan whereby if you order Gran Turismo for the PSP you will be able to unlock one of five supercars from the very first day including Bugatti Veyron, Enzo Ferrari, GT by Citroen concept, Nissan GT-R Spec V and the 1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400. Notice something about that list? Yes, for the very first time it appears the Lamborghini cars will make an appearance in the franchise. No word if this pre-order bonus will apply to Australian gamers yet though.

    Blu-Ray Review
Ferris Bueller's Day Off is one of the most entertaining comedies of the 1980s and Paramount have now released this classic on Blu-Ray. Check out our full review, or just buy the disc as you're unlikely to be disappointed with this fine release of a classic movie...

    PS3 News
Vidzone is at it again. The downloadable music service (which is totally free and pretty excellent we might add) will premiere The Prodigy’s ‘Take Me To The Hospital’ video single exclusively from Wednesday 5th August at 3AM AEST (Tuesday 4th August at 18.00 BST), ahead of the single release on August 31.

    PS3 Review
Crystal Defenders is a downloadable tower based defense game developed by Square-Enix. The first versions of the game were developed for mobile phones, but the game has been (somewhat) upgraded for release on the PS3. We tell you what to expect in our review of this PSN game.

Looking for something new to play but strapped for cash? Well our sponsors Play-Asia have Capcom's Bionic Commando on sale that the moment for $US24.90 ($AU30.50). It is the Asian version, but in-game it's English. Help out Futuregamez by ordering it here.

    PS3 News
Well here's some great news for Sega fans. Apparently that comment the other day that Yakuza 3 would never be released stateside was made by a single PR person, Ray Almeda, and is not Sega's final position. In fact, while it still doesn't offer much hope, Sega have issued the following statement ""At this time, we can not confirm nor deny that Yakuza 3 will be coming over to the states. The statement that has been quoted in the news was this person's own opinion and does not reflect the company's stance on the matter. We will keep you posted on any new developments regarding this title."

    Movie News
Are you a fan of Dynasty Warriors? If so then we highly suggest you check out John Woo's latest movie Red Cliff which is in Australian cinemas now. The movie was actually released in China in two parts, but the studios have condensed the four and half hours of the two movies down to two and half hours for this release, and while some character development is lost, the overall result is still an epic ancient Chinese war movie. It really is a spectacular return to form for director John Woo and we highly recommend the movie. Just be warned; this is a subtitled movie so if you can't read English (or understand Chinese!) then, well, you miss out! Epic...

    PS3 News
Sega has confirmed that their tri-Ace developed RPG, Resonance of Fate will launch in America and Europe simultaneously, or very close to it. The game, called End of Entity in Japan, is due out in that territory late this year with the rest of the world following soon behind in early 2010. Here's hoping this is the first of many great JRPG's in 2010 - a genre not seeing too much love on PS3 to date.

Yesterday's Playstation Store update wasn't overly exciting, although Fat Princess finally saw a release, although at a slightly higher then we hoped price of $AU23.95. I would have expected this game to be around the $16 mark as per most premium titles. Still the beta version was a blast, so this could be worth the cash if you like online multi-player gaming.

Fans of Namco's Katamari Damacy franchise may want to hear the news that the Japanese and Hong Kong Playstation Stores have a demo of Katamari Forever now available. It clocks in at just under 600MB and is well worth a look especially those who have played past games, know the controls, and can overlook the Japanese text in the demo.

Capcom has confirmed they have delayed the release of Dark Void until 2010 to avoid the Christmas glut of games (which is starting to thin out actually!)
