SEPTEMBER 2008 NEWS
September 30, 2008
2K Games has confirmed that Bioshock has gone gold and will be released as expected at the end of the month around the world.
Sadly Sony Europe has re-iterated the fact that Afrika will not be released in Europe. That's a damn shame and we do wish they would change their minds on this very unique title coming to this territory.
Capcom has confirmed that downloadable title Age of Booty (which is about pirates, not hookers before you ask!) will be released on the Playstation Store on October 16th. The game will sell in America for $US10. While hopeful, there hasn't been any confirmation that Europe will also see a release on the same day - Capcom's downloadable games seem to take quite a bit longer to make it out there.
LittleBigPlanet isn't just a game. indeed it promises to redefine the concept of Web 2.0 - creation and sharing of content. With less then a month until this game is released, it was time to update our preview and with the Beta now out to select PS3 owners, and a slew of new information released all the time, we bring you the latest...

Some great news - if it turns out to be true. According to French gaming site Play3-Live Sony have let slip that Afrika will be released in Europe in early 2009. Sony had previously stated that the game would not be released outside Japan. Hopefully we'll have confirmation of this wildlife photography sim sooner rather then later.
Konami has confirmed that a demo of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will hit the Playstation Store later this week. The full game will also include support for Trophies.
Sony Europe has re-confirmed that LittleBigPlanet will be a Blu-Ray release only, and won't be released as a downloadable title as originally suggested. Expect the game to hit retail on October 23rd.
Maximum Risk was one of Jean Claude Van-Damme's bigger action movies of the 1990's. In Maximum Risk he teams up with Natasha Henstridge and manages to take on, well, almost everyone. A Blu-Ray review awaits your perusal...

Those of you that haven't checked out the Playstation Store of late may want to do so after this weeks update. For a bargain price of $AU27.95 you can pick up Wipeout HD - quite simply one of the best games on the system to date. With stunning 1080p visuals. a thumping soundtrack, and brilliant gameplay this is a must-have on your PS3. That wasn't all though. Also in the store this week is MegaMan 9, a Buzz Video Game Quiz Pack (for $8.45), Mercenaries 2 and Beijing 2008 demos, and a tonne of videos and themes.
With a bit of spare time to kill today I have managed to update the PS2 Preview & Release Schedule Page. Make sure you check it out now to see what you can look forward to soon.
Well it has been a while, perhaps too long in fact, but I have updated the PSP Preview & Release Schedule Page. On this page you will find all the major releases up to Christmas, and then some into 2009. Want to see what you'll be playing on the run? Check it out now.

What a day! The AFL Grand Final took place today and the match was an absolute cracker. Geelong, who have only lost one game from 24 played this year were defeated, quite convincingly we might add, by Hawthorn in one of the biggest upsets in recent years. If you missed the game you may want to check out the streaming video on Official AFL website (highlights are online now).
Compounding the business of the today it was my Mum's birthday too - so Happy Birthday Mum, and apologies for turning it into another AFL watching experience - I always said you shouldn't have been born in late September!
To finish off the day I managed to watch the movie United 93 which is about one of the doomed planes from September 11. This was one of the most powerful, and emotional, movies I have seen in recent time, and I certainly recommend you check it out. Sadly, there is no Blu-Ray release scheduled as yet, but the DVD will serve you fine in the meantime.
Oh finally, we've put new carpet in the house yesterday, which is why we've been a slack on the reviews and previews over the last two weeks. I never realised how much crap we accumulated in ten years living here, but a couple of bins full and a trip to the tip has helped out - somewhat. I may be a little slow with updates over the next day or two as I manage to find everything (if anyone can find my PS3 controllers let me know!).

According to this report on the OFLC's website Silent Hill: Homecoming has been Refused Classification in Australia. This menas the game can't be released here for rental or sale. Yet again Australia sits in the draconian part of the world without a R18+ rating for adult gamers. Pick up your game...
Well Criterion have done it again. Another patch for Burnout Paradise. This 35MB patch is another great positive for this brilliant game - it adds trophy support. There are dozens of trophies to unlock (probably around 100 - we're too lazy to count). The only slight disappointment is that the trophies aren't retroactive, so you'll need to start the game again to unlock them all.

2K Sports have announced that their upcoming basketball game NBA 2K9 will feature "living rosters". What does this mean? Well according to press release Living Rosters will ensure dedicated fans are playing with the most up-to-date and complete basketball experience ever available in the NBA 2K franchise. In addition to delivering constant updates to player ratings and player tendencies, Living Rosters will also offer exclusive access to unlockable animation packages for players in the game. When a player starts to heat up and takes his game to the next level on the real courts, new animation packages will unlock for that player in the video game. When the Living Rosters feature is activated and a gamer signs in online, the game automatically checks for Living Roster updates in order to download the latest real-life player information in a seamless process behind the scenes. Sounds like a great addition. NBA 2K9 is due out on October 10th.
Activision has sent out word that they have sold 1.5 millions copies of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed making it the fastest selling game for LucasArts, and the Star Wars franchise. As you would be aware we've reviewed the game, and quite enjoyed the experience. If you haven't done so, we suggest you check out our review here.
Apparently Electronic Arts have announced release dates and pricing for Rock Band in Australia. Unfortunately they aren't responding to my e-mails at the moment but rumours point to a November 7th release. Now, we have to point out this IS NOT the sequel which hit America last month, but the original game which came out over a year ago. Meh, in that case I'll stick with the much better looking Guitar Hero World Tour thanks.
September 23, 2008
Looking forward to Bioshock on the PS3? Well you're not alone and 2K Games have some awesome news for everyone. While the game was confirmed for release on October 24th, the game has now been moved forward until October 17th - just over 3 weeks away folks!
Sega Australia has confirmed that, like Europe, Golden Axe: Beast Rider will be released here on October 17th. Woohoo!

Something that we noticed only today is that Atari's latest release schedule is showing Tomb Raider: Underworld on the PS2 won't be released until 2009. The PS3 version of the game (previewed here) is due in late November.
Saint's Row 2 is a game which action fans have to keep an eye on, without question. THQ and Volition are putting the finishing touches on a game that looks every bit as entertaining as a certain Rockstar juggernaut. We've got the latest screens and details right here...
September 21, 2008
The producer of Ubisoft's Far Cry 2, Louis-Pierre Pharand, has confirmed there will not be a demo of that game released. The reason is due to the open nature of the game. In terms of game length it is expected that the average gamer will take around 40 hours to complete the game. In terms of multi-player there will be four modes available; Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond (similar to CTF) and Uprising which plays a bit like VIP mode. Far Cry 2 will be released in Australia on October 23rd.
As many of you know Australian developers Team Bondi have been working on L.A. Noire for Rockstar for what seems like an eternity with few details released to date. Tom Crago, the CEO of Tantalus and the president of the Game Developers’ Association of Australia, has some news though. Apparently the game is set to be one of the most expensive ever as he states it "could be the biggest budget videogame in development anywhere in the world. It would certainly… in terms of console titles, be in the top ten... LA Noire is a massive, massive project". Interestingly though he mentioned that the game is coming to XBox 360 as well as PS3 (it was believed to be an PS3 exclusive) but that the game is still at least 12 months away.
Bioshock is coming out a year after PC and XBox 360 released, but finally PS3 gamers are about to get their hands on what has been heralded one of the greatest games of all time. We've updated our preview for you and detail the improvements made to the PS3 game.
September 19, 2008
Funtastic have sent out an e-mail today stating that Pure is shipping to retail early and will be 'officially' on sale on October 2nd. Given that the games are shipping now it wouldn't surprise me to see some stores selling it next week. The arcade racer looks to be tremendous fun (and if you're not sure we suggest you check out the 1.6GB download!).
September 18, 2008
What can we say... If you haven't downloaded Life With Playstation we suggest you do so. It's brilliant. Not only can you see the current weather conditions for many cities around the world (including Sydney and Melbourne, but not Brisbane sadly) but also the current cloud cover around the globe, and the news headlines from each city. Want more. Well clicking on the news headlines takes you to the news article, and you can also get camera images from each city. I love it, and you should to so spend a few minutes downloading it by clicking on your old Folding@Home logo which will be replaced. Well done Sony.
September 17, 2008
PS3 Firmware 2.43 is out today. But don't bother downloading it as it does nothing at all. Seriously. Even Sony have confirmed, and trumpeted, that the update is for Japan only. Save your 125MB download folks. As for what it does over there, well nothing either apparently. Now having said that some people on the web are claiming that Life with Playstation is now live and replaces the Folding@Home logo - its not there for us though!
Capcom has confirmed that Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will indeed be released during 2008. As yet there is no price for the oft-delayed game.
Good news for action game fans with Ubisoft confirming that Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway has gone gold. The game is expected to hit shelves on September 25th.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is a game which I, like millions of Star Wars fans, have been waiting a long time for. LucasArts' latest Star Wars title promises everything, a bridging story between Episode III and IV, fantastic technology, and great gameplay. Does it all gel though? A review...
September 16, 2008
Marianne Krawczyk has spoken at the Austin GDC and mentioned that the script she is working on for God of War III will probably be around 120 pages for the three act experience. The game is currently due out in late 2009 - hopefully.
Electronic Arts and Criterion have confirmed that the next patch for Burnout Paradise will be release on September 18 which is, well, at the end of this week. This update will include motorbikes as well as a host of other bits. Best of all, it's free. Here's the details:
- Pick from 2 motorcycles featuring male or female characters and start on a whole new progression to earn your Bike License.
- 38 new against-the-clock race events – Burning Ride and Midnight Ride.
- A brand new in-game 24 hr day / night cycle that impacts traffic density and available events. (It's fully customisable – you can make it day/night/change the clock speed – it's up to you.)
- Dynamic weather brings an all-new look to Paradise City
- And if that's not enough, we've got 70 more Freeburn Challenges too

Been hanging out to get your hands on Wipeout HD? Well you're not alone and there's not long to go with Sony announcing the game will be released around the gobe on September 25th - that's only 10 days from now. The game will sell for £11.99 in the UK and $19.99 on the American Store. No date yet for the Australian version (we're putting money on about $29.95). The game includes 1080p visuals, 5 game modes (Single Race, Tournament, Time Trial, Speed Lap and Zone Mode), split screen gameplay, 8 reversible tracks and 12 teams, and 8-players online racing.

If you're a Star Wars fan then we suggest you get your pre-orders in for this game. As for our review. Almost complete, so we'll have it online as soon as the 17th hits (we can't post it before then).
Electronic Arts have confirmed they are withdrawing all offers and plans to take over Take Two. I guess that's one more company that won't be destroyed by the mega corporation. Who could ever imagine a GTA game being brought out by Electronic Arts.
Lego Batman: The Videogame is certain to be one of the most entertaining games this Christmas. Traveller's Tales are back with the third franchise covered by their Lego series and this game looks great. We've done up our preview with latest screens and details.
September 14, 2008
European PS3 owners may want to check their e-mail inboxes as Sony Europe have sent out invites to download the Motorstorm Pacific Rift beta. The beta does not include online gameplay, but does have split screen racing. We didn't get an e-mail/invite so if someone has one to spare please let us know!
No Country For Old Men is one of the best movies of 2007. In fact it managed to win four Academy Awards and a host of others along the way. This Coen Brothers film is one which had a big box office, and received plenty of critical praise so we were quite keen to review this Paramount Blu-Ray disc.
September 12, 2008
A couple of days ago we suggested that the new Prince of Persia game would be subtitled The Fallen King. It seems though that that is the name given to the Nintendo DS game, and not the major consoles (at least not according to Ubisoft yet).
Wondering where the European and Australian Playstation Store update is today? Well Sony have hit a technical glitch, so it has been delayed until, well, they fix it. We do know that one of the big items that should be going up sometime soon is a demo for FIFA 09.
Sony America has confirmed that Motorstorm Pacific Rift will be released there on October 28th. This is a bit earlier then expected as our latest sources are pinning the Australian version to November 13th.
C&VG is reporting that WipEout HD will cost £11.99 when it hits the Playstation Network. Unfortunately Sony still can't pin down a date, but given that the game is pretty much complete, and has been priced, it can't be too far off!
According to Capcom's shareholder report the company will not be releasing any exclusive games in future. The statement reads (in part): "All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games". There you have it folks.

SingStar ABBA is being developed in full collaboration with ABBA and Universal Music Group in Sweden, which manages the rights to the ABBA brand. The terms of the agreement include a window of exclusivity for disc-based PlayStation titles until December 2009.
Call of Duty 4 is a game thousands of people continue to play on a daily basis, and this weekend should be a big one. Not only will Activision be reducing the price of the Map Pack (Which includes 4 new levels) to half price, but it will also be a double XP weekend. (Update: This weekend is actually for 360 gamers, the PS3 one is a couple of weekends away!)
Well those of you in the UK are going to be out of luck with the news that Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty will not be released on Blu-Ray in that territory - apparently the 3.2GB downloadable version will suffice. At this stage other parts of Europe are still going to get the disc. As for Australia, well it seems unlikely that we will get it here now as well sadly.
If you love your Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and a certain band known as Metallica then Activision have a treat in store for you. September 9, 2008
Been wondering what the new Prince of Persia will be called? Would Ubisoft even expand the name at all for this latest release or leave it simply at that? Well it seems there will be a subtitle on the game. According to this link at the Australian Classification Board the game will be called Prince of Persia: The Fallen King. Not a bad name in our books! The game has been rated PG with the Consumer Advice of Mild Violence.

Koei has confirmed that they will be releasing Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 in Europe on the PS3 sometime in 2009.
Cloverfield was one of the most interesting movies to hit cinemas this year. Not your typical moster movie, which generally turns out to be an action movie, this is taken from the viewpoint of a small group of people with a handy cam trying to survive the mayhem. Interesting, unique and gripping this is worth a look.
September 3, 2008
