    PS3 News
Well today was expected to be another big one for the Playstation 3 with Phil Harrison giving his keynote speech at the Game Developers conference - and it didn't disappoint. While no images or video have made it out yet (perhaps it was closed to cameras) there is certainly some great information.

    • The PS3 will not have region coding on games. That means you'll be able to import and play games from Japan, America or anywhere else in the world without a problem (well, as long as you can speak the languages).

    • One reason for the lack of region coding is that the Blu-Ray discs allow for massive amounts of data (50GB) and multiple versions/languages can be stored on each disc if the developers choose to do so.

    • Phil Harrison showed two new demos. One was of a car getting shot up and destroyed, the other featured the yellow ducks underwater with thousands of fish swimming around, and spectacular lighting from above.

    • Sony announced a new version of Singstar for PS3, which seems to be referred as Songstar. This game will allow you to download new songs from online servers.

    • Warhawk (which will be playable at E3), Resistance: Fall of Man (previously known as I-8), Heavenly Sword, and Motorstorm where shown in real-time form, while a new Ratchet game was announced and shown.

    • Sony will be showing the final controller design at this years E3 show.

    • The PS3 will ship with the 60GB HDD, larger drives will be available.

    • Games will also be downloadable in a similar fashion to Steam services, but through Sony's online service.

    • Most importantly - especially for us - Phil Harrison confirmed that Australia WILL be a part of the worldwide launch in November - no doubt a small dig at Microsoft only launching the XBox 360 here today.

    Industry News
Well midnight tonight is a monumental occasion for gamers in Australia - after numerous delays, including a 4 month delay from the "worldwide" release and a 3 week delay announced only weeks ago the XBox 360 finally launches tonight at numerous stores around the country kicking off the next-generation console wars. Needless to say the XBox 360 isn't a horse we're backing - in fact, even looking at the system from a impartial standpoint the number of ports and/or game rehashes is downright disappointing. Sure, there will be original titles later on, but by then the PS3 launch will be in full swing, and indeed we'll all be playing true next generation games. Still, today is exciting for any gamer in Australia - if only to check out the competition.

I guess it's somewhat interesting, or somewhat amusing, that Sony's Phil Harrison is set to take the Stage at the Game Developers Conference in America at almost exactly the same time that the XBox 360 launches at midnight here. Naturally that won't be his topic, but he is expected to spill a lot more details about the Playstation 3 and it's launch. Stay tuned tomorrow for all the juicy details which may be simply a rehash of the details announced in Japan last week, or may spill some more info including new games, or even a price.

Over the last couple of days the Japanese Katamari Damacy web site (available here) posted a countdown clock which expired recently. While some anticipated the announcement of a new game in the series it was quite the opposite with news that there will be no more Katamari games, and indeed that the team has dissolved. The site does mention to look for a new game from creator Keita Takahashi but that there would be no rolling around or creating large things.

Well it looks like Australian gamers will be very happy this November. C&VG had this comment published on their web site:

David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has added: "We are absolutely delighted that we will be able to bring PS3 to gamers in Europe and Australia before Christmas. This is an exciting first for Europe, and is a huge endorsement and vote of confidence in the strength of the European market and its importance globally."

    PSP News
After being swept up in the stunning PS3 news yesterday we failed to bring you the news that Sony announced for the PSP. Firstly the system will be undergoing a price cut in America to $US199.99. As yet the price cut isn't confirmed for Australia - but it's almost certain to happen. Secondly Sony have announced and Eye Toy styled camera for the device which will be released around September in America. This will allow Eye Toy: Play styled games, and also video conferencing, and while not announced we'd also expect it to be used like a normal camera as well. Video and VOIP (Voice Over IP) will launch in October with "motion jpg" format chosen for the system. The PSP will also be given GPS capabilities. Flash will be supported in future, as will improvements to RSS feeds, and saving of streaming audio and video. Finally Sony are looking at launching downloadable content (PSOne game for instance) which can be played without the use of a UMD in the system.

    PS3 News
Sony has just completed their Playstation Briefing and it was one hell of an event with major PS3 announcements made. Below are the key points, and before you ask a) no new games were shown or announced and b) there is no price yet.

    • The big news is that the PS3 launch dates have been announced. November in Japan, November in America and November in Europe. That's right folks Sony are going for a simultaneous worldwide launch. Let's just hope that unlike what Microsoft think Australia is also included in the definition of "worldwide". This is a delay from the expected Q'2 launch and Ken Kutaragi put it down to "Blu-ray spec finalization" which, as many of you will know, is due to problems with copyright protection which is only now being sorted out.

    • The initial 2006 launch (Nov/Dec) will consist of 6 million units, with 1 million units per month after the New Year.

    • The system will use a 2.5" 60GB HDD, although larger drives may also be possible. There wasn't a direct confirmation that it was included with the system, but it seemed implied. The drive will run on a Linux system and allow storage of downloadable content and allow the PS3 to act as a media server.

    • PSOne and PS2 games will be playable on the system and the system will convert the images to High Definition.

    • The PS3 will have a full 'Live' styled online service which is being developed by Sony Online Entertainment. Sony confirmed that the service will be 'free', although we expect some sort of fees to be payable on premium content which, if recent rumours are true, will include downloadable PSOne and PS2 games!

    • Final development kits will be shipping to developers this June, this should give them plenty of time to complete games. Earlier development kits started arriving in 2005.

    PS2 Games
Game Informer has leaked information confirming that God of War 2: Divine Retribution is deep into development at Sony America. There's little new information however the game isn't expected to hit the shelves until February 2007 with plenty of news, and a proper unveiling, expected at the E3 show in May.

    Industry News
Well it was either a massive mistake or a, well massive fake, but Ubisoft America has denied that the release schedule that was released a couple of days ago was real. The schedule, which first appeared on GamePro, is apparently a fake - but in our opinion if it is a fake, it's a pretty damn good one.
