The second half of 2003 and early 2004 has been a bit tougher for Sony with the XBox managing to peg back to level sales, mostly due to the higher price of the Playstation 2. Still it's the games that count at this stage and we can expect some major titles from not only Sony but also 3rd party publishers for the PS2. Want some new hardware? Well it's possible we may see 4 new items at this years E3 show. These include the PSTwo (the revised Playstation 2), PSX (the DVD recorder), PSP (the handheld) and possibly, but less likely, the Playstation 3. Sony's dominance is just beginning.

This coverage is split up into different publishers/developers on the game sides, and as the week progresses more previews and screenshots will be added to each game. Any hardware and price drops being announced will be added into their respective areas as announced. Let the fun begin.

SUNDAY MAY 15, 2004
Perhaps the biggest news of the 2004 E3 show has turned out to be something which everyone wish didn't (or couldn't happen). Apparently a couple of young men have stolen the demo code for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. After leaning on the case they simply ejected the disc before taking off for the exits.

Sony have confirmed that the PSP will be playable at this years Tokyo Game show in September.

The E3 show for 2004 has just closed a couple of hours ago (about midday Saturday Australian time) but the news won't stop anytime soon. There were literally hundreds of titles on display for the Playstation 2 and for the next couple of days you can expect many, many more previews being added. Make sure you scroll down to have a look at the previews.

    EIDOS' GAMES AT E3 2004
25 to Life - One of the surprises at Eidos' booth at E3 this game allows 16-players online to compete in urban warfare.

Backyard Wrestling 2 - The first game was a major disappointment, this game looks better, but does it play better? Time will tell.

Crash N' Burn - Being developed by Climax this game looks very impressive. Can it compete in a crowded market though?

Get on Da Mic - Essentially a singing game with hip-hop music to sing to.

Shellshock Nam '67 - Another game based in the Vietnam war. What makes this game so interesting is that it is being developed by Guerilla who are working on one of Sony's biggest titles this year, Killzone. The graphics in Shellshock look very atmospheric and this will certainly be a game to keep an eye on.

FRIDAY MAY 14, 2004
Sega's big revelation at E3 was little more then a new game, which wasn't even new. Sadly PS2 owners don't benefit either. What is it? Well the big surprise was that Sega will be publishing Matrix Online. So and old game that UbiSoft dropped will be picked up for PC only by Sega. Wow... Perhaps more exciting, and this should be the bigger news, is that Sega are developing Phantasy Star Universe which as yet hasn't got a platform let alone a date.

Capcom are probably the last major publisher to add to this list of games. They certainly have one of the most impressive lists as well. Sadly Killer 7 wasn't shown for PS2. Here's the PS2 titles at E3 2004:

Capcom Fighting Jam - One of the biggest surprise at the E3 show is this game. Yes, it's another fighting game but this 2D fighter includes characters from five other Capcom titles. Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter III, Darkstalkers, and Red Earth.

Crimson Tears - Tokyo 2049. Three humanoid biological weapons must meet their destiny head on and fight for their future. Crimson Tears is a fast-paced futuristic 3D action game taking place in the high tech underworld of future Tokyo. Control the fate of three humanoid biological weapons: Amber, the twin blade samurai, Kadie, the mechanical eradicator, and Tokio, the steel gunslinger.

Devil May Cry 3 - Hopefully this game can return to the glory of the original title rather then the lame sequel. At this stage it looks promising.

Megaman X8 - The Megaman X series hits the 8th title and 3D graphics look better then ever.

Monster Hunter - Monster Hunter heads online in this action adventure title. Release in Europe unknown at this stage.

Nightmare Before Christmas - The Tim Burton classic gets turned into the game. Looking good the game should be released in late 2004.

Onimusha 3: Demon Seige - The third game in the series stars Jean Reno and Paris this time. Possibly the best looking PS2 game ever.

Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 - The second Resident Evil game to go online. Hopefully Capcom will get this sequel running in Europe.

Shadow of Rome - Another big surprise was provided with this title which is set in Ancient Rome. Looking hot this title should be release late this year.

Street Fighter Anniversary Collection - As it says, a collection of past games being bundled together. Street Fighter fans will be happy with this one.

Under the Skin - I told you Capcom had a big list of games, and plenty of surprises. This title is cell shaded, and well, very strange.

Viewtiful Joe (1 and 2) - Not being sold together, but seperate this is one of the most original and exciting games in recent years.

Namco is one company who have kept their titles very close to their chest prior to E3 show, but their list of games being shown is impressive. One interesting non-appearance at the E3 show is Cold Fear which was a title leaked on Sony's E3 site before the show started. Anyway here is the other PS2 titles:

    NAMCO'S GAMES AT E3 2004
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War - Namco's latest game was announced some time ago now, but is getting a decent showing at this years E3 show. Everything is coming together nicely with some stunning visuals on offer and familair air combat. This game is shaping up superbly.

Dead To Rights II - Jack Slate and Shadow (the Syberian Husky) are back in Dead To Rights II which features improved visuals and improved gameplay. Though he swore he’d never return to the city that left him for dead, the plight of an innocent girl draws Jack back.

Death By Degrees - Not sure what this game is? Well, it's actually the spin off game featuring Nina Williams of Tekken fame. The game includes some nice visuals and gameplay in the stealth/action style.

Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament 2 - The sequel to Namco's hit tennis game is coming out soon, and looks quite improved from the original. Expect a release in America and Australia in June.

Time Crisis: Crisis Zone - Namco return to the light guns with this action packed title. As with other games in the series we can expect plenty of bonuses on the Playstation 2. Almost totally destructable levels and dual gun mode feature. The game is scheduled for release in September 2004, with the PAL release likely for later in the year or early next.

Tekken 5 - Did someone say Tekken 5? Yep, it's coming to Playstation 2 in 2005 but at this stage details and screens are almost non-existent. Expect more news soon, hopefully!

Xenosaga Episode II - Not in playable for at E3 the game was in video only, but with a release of Spring 2005 for America there will be quite a wait still. I would love to see this game get a release in PAL territories, but I'm not so sure The RPG will make it out here.

Atari are another company that kept things quiet until the show. Here's their list of PS2 titles on display:

    ATARI'S GAMES AT E3 2004
DRIV3R - The third game in Atari's Driver series is almost here with a late June release now confirmed. This is the first time that the series will be available on the Playstation 2, and the entire game is shaping up quite nicely indeed. Check out the preview with all the details on this hot title.

Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone - From the developers of Return of the King for Electronic Arts comes this hot title which, although set in a different world, looks very similar, both in terms of graphics and gameplay. Expect to hear plenty about this title prior to release.

Godzilla Save The Earth - Based on the legenday Japanese monster this game is essentially a 4-player brawler. Expect a release in late 2004.

Terminator 3: Redemption - This will be Atari's third crack at getting a Terminator game right, the last two were simply dreadful. Fortunately a new developer Paradigm Entertainment has stepped in and Terminator 3 Redemption is certainly looking not only like an improvement, but a great game overall.

Transformers - This game has just shipped to retail, and we've been playing it here at Future Gamez for some time now. Simply put - stunning. Developed at Melbourne House it's easy to see why Atari have placed so much emphasis and hype on this title. For once, a game that deserves every accolade it gets.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament - Developed by Digital Fiction this 2-player game is a battle/card game. Announced at E3 2003 it's taken a year to appear - will it make it to Australia? I'm not so sure.

Make sure you check out the titles listed below for new previews which are being added several times a day. Well, what are you waiting for?

Something interesting to note is that according to SCEA's web site Gran Turismo 4 has an American release date of Q'4 2004. That will certainly see the PAL release pushed from September until that date, or possibly early 2005.

Sony America also have quite a few games on display. As yet few details are available, but here's a list of PS2 titles they are expected to be showing.

Athens 2004 - Athens 2004 is the official game of this years Summer Olympics, and the only place you will be able to play the game is on the Playstation 2. Unlike the real event this game seems to be coming together quite nicely with the developers Eurocom promising some unique gameplay techniques (such as the dance mat) rather then the buttom mashing of other similar games.

ATV Offroad Fury 3 - Quad racing is set to return with Climax developing the game for Playstation 2. Race more than 20 terrain-conquering ATVs through the most diverse and challenging environments imaginable. Find your own road through more than 30 huge, offroad races - each with distinct terrain types.

God of War - From the director of the Twisted Metal franchise. God of War brings to life the brutality and violence of the ancient Greek myths. Battle giant Cyclops, fearsome Minotaurs, and the deadly Medusa while navigating through war-torn Athens in search of Pandora’s Box.

Gran Turismo 4 - As the fourth installment of the worldwide blockbuster-selling Gran Turismo series, Gran Turismo 4 will be available exclusively for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. The creative and talented minds of Polyphony Digital, Inc. have once again succeeded in developing the most technologically advanced racing experience ever. Gran Turismo 4 features a truly authentic racing experience spanning 100 years of automotive history. Packed with more cars, courses, race modes and online gameplay via the Network Adaptor, Gran Turismo 4 delivers enhanced, if not perfected game physics and graphics.

Hot Shots Golf Fore! - The fun and magic of Hot Shots Golf returns to the PlayStation 2 with Hot Shots Golf FORE! Join in on the off-the-wall fun, true-to-life physics and new Online gameplay. With more courses and more characters than ever before Hot Shots Golf FORE! delivers more of what HSG fanatics have grown to love.

Jak 3 - One of the greatest adventures of all time continues in Jak 3, as Naughty Dog’s multi-million selling series returns for the third installment. Although Jak saved Haven City from Kor and his threatening Metal Head army, the citizens of the city banished Jak due to their distrust of his dark powers. Dropped off in the barren Wasteland and left for dead, Jak and his trusty comrade Daxter begin their epic journey, meeting new allies and fighting dangerous enemies along the way. With potent weapons, armor and vehicles, Jak also discovers that there is something deep inside him — an emerging power — the balance to Dark Jak–Light Jak.

Killzone - In an era of planetary colonization, a ruthless separatist faction has launched a surprise attack on the ISA (International Strategic Alliance). Arm yourself against the Helghast, and become immersed in a cinematic storyline wrapped around an all out action, first person shooter experience. With intense firefights and breathtaking graphics, Killzone captures the grit and reality of a massive post-modern war.

MLB 2005 - Baseball - unlikely to be seen outside America where it's already out.

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal - In Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet and Clank once again team up for an all-new adventure combining diverse gameplay with elements of action, exploration, adventure, puzzle-solving, strategy, role-playing and fierce battles into one riveting experience. Featuring single-player and introducing new multiplayer offline and online gameplay, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal aims to push the action platform genre even further to deliver one of the most exciting and fulfilling single-player and multiplayer experiences ever.

Rise of Kasai - The sequel to the highly acclaimed The Mark of Kri offers gamers artistically stylized gameplay filled with magic and mysterious spells, an innovative fighting mechanic, and online compatibility with intense collaborative combat action.

Siren - Midnight. A Siren calls from a sea of red, and a village mysteriously disappears. A terrible force has enveloped the small Japanese village of Hanuda. Red water has strangely surrounded the mountainous town, and slowly but surely the village’s inhabitants are transforming into shibito, undead shells of their old selves, fueled by evil and hate. This is the story of ten characters, each caught in a living nightmare and embroiled in his/her own fight for survival. Taking place over the course of three days, the paths of these characters intersect as they attempt to uncover the mystery of the Siren.

Sly 2: Band of Thieves - The charming, wry, master thief is back! And this time, Sly and his crew are in for the job of their lives. This next episodic adventure is a technologically, awe-inspiring, action-packed heist thriller in the true tradition of the best crime caper movies around. So, say goodbye to the Rat Pack as you know it because there’s a new Raccoon Pack in town!

Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain - Put in charge of a powerful new black-box Agency, Gabe Logan uses all of his resources in a desperate battle against the clock. He and his team combat terrorists from all over the world as they struggle to discover who mutated the original virus, and why. But ultimately, Gabe must battle with the dark side of high-stakes espionage: how far will he push his team to solve the mystery behind Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain.

The Getaway: Black Monday - Team Soho are returning with the sequel to their hit game, The Getaway. The developers seem to have taken complaints about the first into consideration to make this an even better game.

World Tour Soccer 2005 - 989 Sports return with their latest soccer title. Will it make it to Australia? Actually it's coming out here as This is Football 2004. PES3 beater? Not quite, but it is online.

Check out yesterday's news about Konami's lineup for added details on all games at E3 2004.

The big presentation today, and to be honest not a lot was revealed. The PS3 was a no show as expected, the PSX nowhere to be seen, the PSTwo also non-existant. What Sony did put a lot of emphasis on was the PSP. Here's Sony's official press release about the console which pretty much details everything - except the price!

LOS ANGELES, May 11, 2004 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today the product specifications for the handheld video game system, PlayStation®Portable (PSP), three-dimensional-CG games incorporating high-quality, full-motion video similar to PlayStation 2 can be played anytime, anywhere with PSP. PSP is scheduled to be launched in Japan in the end of 2004, followed by the North American and European launches in the spring of 2005.

PSP comes in a black color, with a 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD centered in a sleek ergonomic design with a high-quality finish that fits comfortably in the hands. The dimensions are 170mm x 74mm x 23mm with a weight of 260g. PSP features a high-quality TFT LCD that displays full color (16.77 million colors) on a 480 x 272 pixel high-resolution screen. It also comes complete with the basic functions of a portable player such as built-in stereo speakers, exterior headphone connector, brightness control and sound mode selection. Keys and controls inherit the same operability of PlayStation and PlayStation 2, familiar to fans all over the world.

PSP also comes equipped with diverse input/output connectors such as USB 2.0, and 802.11b (Wi-Fi) wireless LAN, providing connectivity to various devices in the home and to the wireless network outside. The world of gaming is further enhanced by enabling users to enjoy online gaming, or by connecting multiple PSPs to each other, directly via the wireless network. In addition, software and data can be downloaded through a USB or wireless network onto Memory Stick PRO Duo. All of these features can be enjoyed on one single system.

PSP adopts a small but high-capacity optical medium UMD (Universal Media Disc), enabling game software, rich with full-motion video and other forms of digital entertainment content, to be stored. The newly developed UMD, the next-generation compact storage media, is only 60mm in diameter but can store up to 1.8GB of digital data. A broad range of digital entertainment content such as music video clips, movies and sports programs can be provided on UMD. To protect this entertainment content, a robust copyright protection system has been developed which utilizes a combination of a unique disc ID, a 128 bit AES encryption keys for the media, and individual ID for each PSP hardware unit.

SCEI intends to aggressively promote PSP and UMD as the new handheld entertainment platform for the coming era.

In this morning's presentation Sony America confirmed that the Playstation 2 would drop in price to $US149. This brings it in line with XBox, but is hardly the killer price that people were hoping for of $US99 or $US129. Still, it's better then nothing.

TUESDAY MAY 11, 2004
Konami have announced their games being shown at E3 later this week, and there are a couple of surprises - not only because Konami's seperate divisions announced their own games, not as one big list. Here are the Playstation 2 games:

Dance Dance Revolution Extreme - The greatest dance party returns with smash hit songs, unique modes and more features than ever before. Get ready to shake your groove thang with Dance Dance Revolution EXTREME. Over 100 minutes of energetic dance music and new Eye Toy USB Camera (for PlayStation 2) support will have the dance floor pumping all night long.

Enthusia: Professional Racing - Enthusia Professional Racing puts you in the driver's seat and recreates the sensation of racing real cars. As in the real world Enthusia emphasizes driving skills and ensures that winning is a result of ability rather than how much money has been spent tuning a car and maintains a subtle balance between the power of the car a driver's skill. With a host of features Enthusia promises to deliver the ultimate driving experience for casual and hardcore racing fans alike. Fasten your seatbelt!

Gradius V - Gradius. Without a doubt the series is one of the all time greats. In an age when side-scrolling shooters are a distant memory it's great to see that Konami are trying to breathe new life into the series with some fantastic visuals and improved gameplay.

McFarlane's Evil Prophecy - In a time long ago, four warriors were given the task of saving the world from ultimate evil. Each endowed with special powers of the elements, together they fight the evil that plagues the land. Against such enemies, as the Werewolf, Sea Creature, Voodoo Queen, Mummy, Frankenstein and Dracula, our warriors must strengthen their alliances, or face the ultimate doom that is McFarlane's Evil Prophecy.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater looks set to bring an entirely fresh slant to the series, with a great majority of the game being played outside in the jungles. This has been one of the most talked about, rumored about, and drooled about games since its unveiling at the last E3 show in America in 2003. This is almost certian to be one of the games of 2004.

Nanobreaker - In the distant future, nanotechnology goes awry and nanomachines start to harvest the blood of humans in an effort to construct an army of monster machines. To defend the world from this certain apocalypse, players control a military cyborg who wields a powerful, shape-shifting Plasma Blade. Using a variety of fighting techniques, hack and slash through hordes of enemy units to save humanity!

Neo Contra - Contra is coming back to the PS2. The previous game on the system, Contra: Shattered Soldier, was a great game for old school gamers, but not the casual gamer. The game was rock hard, with many levels taking direct inspiration from the Super Nintendo title, Contra 3: The Alien Wars. Neo Contra is quite a different game with many options and enhancements that were very much lacking in the previous title and should impress at E3.

Phantom Crash: 2050 - Konami brings the first online mech combat game to the Sony PlayStation 2 entertainment system with Phantom Crash 2050. This fast paced mech action is the sport of the future, where players pilot their customized mechs to win cash and worldwide dominance. Over 1 million possible mech configurations and phantom stealth abilities make this one mech party you'll have to crash.

Rave Master International - Based on the exciting comic books from Tokyopop, become the Rave Master in this action-packed multiplayer game for the PlayStation 2. Embark on an epic quest with characters and storylines adapted directly from the comic book series. With easy controls, rich 3D graphics, dynamic action scenes and 3 different modes of play, Rave Master International offers unlimited fun and a unique mix of action, adventure and fighting. Let the Groove Wars Begin!

Rumble Roses - Get down with Rumble Roses, the first and only all-women’s wrestling game on any platform. These wrestling beauties not only score a perfect 10,000 polygons per character, they also have all the some of the best moves and talent found in any wrestling game. But make sure to watch out for that Mud Match Mode, because these sexy vixens might get dirty.

Shaman King Power of Spirit - Based on the all-new TV series, this fighting/strategy game for the PlayStation 2 lets you control Yoh Asakura and his friends in an exciting adventure. Immerse yourself in real-time battles, experience the innovative active talk system and behold unbelievable 3D graphics as you strive to be the next Shaman King!

Silent Hill 4: The Room - Henry Townshend finds himself trapped in his apartment that has been cursed by a deeply rooted evil. Only by exploring mysterious portals leading to disturbing alternate worlds will Henry begin to uncover the truth. However, in true Silent Hill fashion, mysterious new characters, horrendous creatures, and the undead will use any means necessary to impede his progress. Silent Hill 4: The Room features a terrifying experience that fans and newcomers will never forget.

Suikoden IV - The mysteries surrounding the Rune of Punishment will be answered in the newest installment of the hit RPG series, Suikoden IV. Follow the plight of a young knight as he struggles with a powerful Rune that slowly steals the life of its bearer. The oceanic environment filled with huge ships and vast oceans is brought to life with a captivating score, dynamic lighting effects and highly detailed 3D models.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 - This is the second game in the series. The action is packed into another exciting series of adventures with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus. Run with the Turtle dudes as they show off their new Ninja abilities against all new opponents. Only the best can turn chaos into control with simultaneous play for up to four players in both cooperative and head-to-head modes.

Y's The Ark of Napishtim - Washed ashore on an uncharted island, Adol Christin begins a new journey in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim. Lush environments, beautifully rendered characters and animated 3D backdrops combine to create the setting for Adol's newest adventure. In the world of Canaan, our red-headed hero must fight deadly monsters and menacing bosses with a variety of sword combinations, special attacks and magical spells creating a uniquely deep and compelling gameplay experience.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum - Become the Capsule Monster King by showing your dueling strength in the Coliseum! Create your own unique symbol and build your army of monsters to duel in this intense tactical board game. Spectacular battle scenes erupt in your quest to defeat your opponents and prove that you are the Capsule Monster Champion.

Codemasters have confirmed their E3 lineup, while not as detailed as many press releases, actually it's only a list, there are several games of interest for PS2 owners and I've added some details from each title's press release in the past. The Playstation 2 games being shown at E3 include:

Second Sight - Developed by Free Radical this game is hot. Combining an atmospheric, psychological thriller narrative with paranormal psychic abilities, stealthy exploration and intense shooter action, the game has already received acclaim from games press with PSM2 calling it “one of the best-looking and original action adventures of the year.” Bringing a new dimension to stealth action games, Second Sight gives players control of a character endowed with incredible psychic abilities. The game offers multiple approaches to completing levels either via stealth, dramatic gunplay, psychic powers or a combination of all three. The ability to psychically influence characters and remotely manipulate objects and individuals provides for a totally fresh gameplay dynamic.

Club Football 2005 range - More clubs join the range this year, which will see an individual and official video game for the top UK and continental European football teams from Manchester United Club Football 2005 to Real Madrid Club Football 2005. Current new English signings to the range are Tottenham Hotspur Club Football 2005, Birmingham City Club Football 2005 with more major clubs still to be announced.

Colin McRae Rally 2005 - Set to be revealed at this year’s E3 Expo (May 12-14, Los Angeles), Colin McRae Rally 2005 takes the series forward with a massive multi-event Career Challenge and introduces online head-to-head rallying, for up to 8 players, on both PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The all-new Career Challenge is the steering wheel-gripping heart of Colin McRae Rally 2005 and has players hurtling through over 20 different classes of rally events including Challenges, Cups, SuperCups, Shields and Championships, earning the right to compete against the very best.

IndyCar Series 2005 - The fastest race on earth is set to return as Codemasters announces that IndyCar Series 2005 will launch this summer, complete with head-to-head online racing for both Xbox and PlayStation 2. Officially licensed by the Indy Racing League®, IndyCar Series 2005 gets a boost with a host of new features to complement the action-packed oval track racing at speeds up to 235mph! The game’s new online racing will see up to 12 players getting fiercely competitive out on the circuits on Xbox, with up to 8 players on PlayStation 2.

MTV Music Generator 3 - Codemasters, a leading global publisher of interactive entertainment, and MTV: Music Television announced today the development of MTV Music Generator 3, the latest generation in the popular music creation and remixing game series. Giving console owners the chance to make the music track of their dreams with ease, the title is scheduled for release in June 2004 on the PlayStation 2.

Midway may not be the biggest publisher in the world, but they have got a few major franchises and their game list for E3 is pretty impressive. Here's their press release.

MONDAY MAY 10, 2004
Sega, once the king of the home consoles may have a couple of major surprises this year, all thanks to a great e-mail they sent to press last week promising a surprise that no one will guess.
