Well, they've finally gone and done it...again. What is it with censors; they haven't yet realised that most gamers are no longer children, and greatly resent being treat as them. Our minds are beyond the evil TV mind warping stage, and a simple classification taken as seriously as porno would be the final solution to our bitching.

But I guess these beaurocrats are thoroughly against such simple answers for such simple situations, and figure that the most complex procedure is the safest (even though more can go wrong...hence our problem). Do they realise they're just fuelling the black market? Because of this travesty, I have now concretely decided to go and get my PS2 modified as soon as possible, simply to get my hands on GTA3 and a decent copy of Twisted Metal: Black.

cbache, Don't hold your breath on it...But I will try and buy my local vid stores copy of GTA3 if you want and then ya can buy it from me.

I have written a complaint to the OFLC fags but I don't think it will achieve much at all.

What makes bans like this even more stupid is that this game is perfectly legal elsewhere in the world (same with tm:b), and that it was released here for some time. I mean, if this game was that bad, why the hell did they release it in the first place?

(so that I could get a copy ;) )

And on the topic of modchips (I've been looking into it since the whole tm:b fiasco and picking up a copy of Jap doa2 at the beginning of the year), the new modchip to end all modchips is the MESSIAH. It doesn't need any action replay or bootdiscs or junk like that for dvds or games. Trouble is that sony's moving to put a lawsuit on them before the chip's even out. And, even when it does come out, chances are it'll be around the $100-$150 mark, without installation.

It's expensive, but a small price to pay to avoid this cr@p...

But really why doesnt OFLC change the stupid classification system and include an 18+ rating. They have had the same stupid rules and regulations since 1995.....and could someone please tell me whats so offensive about twisted metal:black's cut scenes in story mode?

If you checkout gamefaqs.com on the boards and faq pages, there's info there about the cutscenes, but even still it's a lost cause trying to follow the story just by reading a bunch of text...

And I'm really at a loss as to why the game's rated MA+15 right now anyway... everything's been cut out of it, and there isn't really much more that's violent or whatever. I mean, what's so bad about cars exploding and stuff?

Which Topic is this one again?!?!
Well I thought that they just recently passed legislation to include an R rating for games. But I guess not.
I think that is the problem, they just have to enforce the rating more and meet today's gaming public, the 18 to 20 yr olds.

But hey, I got my copy!

I just read that Take 2 plan to literally do a take 2 on the game. As we'd all hoped and predicted, they plan to tweak the game based on Australia's laughably strict standards (due only to Christmas, I might add), and re-release a diluted version. Fvck, I'm getting sick of this $hit!

Oh yeah. If anyone has a copy to sell, please let me know. I want the proper version.

Here's a thought- Is the game taken off the shelves at video stores? If it isn't, then it'd probably wind up being cheaper just to gank their copy and pay the $100 fine or whatever. (not that I endorse this sort of behaviour ;) - reminds me of what people in the US were doing at the launch of the ps2 :D ).

hey all,

I'd just like to say that this game isn't banned in new zealand carrying a lowly ma15+ rating tho I belive we have a R18 rating for games in new zealand.

Also it seems some of your Aussie stock is gonna be for sale in New Zealand. As the game is legal in NZ you could also order a copy from here probably about $120 Aus or so.

Hahaha I just have to laugh.....

this is so lame - i understand the concern for the need for classification but why not have a R rating just like DVD/videos/films.

How difficult whould that be -

the cause of its restriction being based on the content of the game which has been designed for adults and not children- but of course the concern would be that children will access the game and play it.

So ban the game - this arguement is pointless as the R rated videos have the same accessiblity as games. Parents either buy or rent the video and then let them decide if suitable but with a R sticker maybe not?

well why not have a R rating on video games as in movies.. we have MA rated games why ignore the few released games that could justify the rating...

well mod chips and imported games maybe the way to go!! - i wonder if the PC release will happen? with GTA3

gee lolita - romance - 120 days of sodom - and now GTA3 - have to love the people who think what we cant watch and play.

The ratings system for videogames sucks completely compared to movies and television. For example, on the topic of NUDITY... ;)

Movies: You can have tits and stuff with an M rating no worries. Hell, if you're lucky sometimes they get away with just a pg rating.

Videogames: No nudity whatsoever is allowed, no matter what the rating. The only exception is when it is for medical purposes, and then I'm not sure what rating it gets.

Well, if you want to get really frustrated at what ratings are set on videogames, you can check out the official (OFLC) ratings at this link:

On the topic of nudity, they also show it here on the regular 6:00pm news. On EVERY channel. Happen to catch those fashion spots they do surprisingly regularly. It's absolute outright nudity (not that I complain), without the slightest hint of trying to hide it. Lets face it, a single layer of clear plastic is not much of a cover-up.

Oh nemesis,
Any chance I could buy a New Zealand copy through you? I could send over a cheque, and you send over a package of pure bliss? I'll pay all the expenses. Give me a buzz at:

I wrote an email to the OFLC and asked them when they were going to get their act together and relise that games were not just for kids.... and they sent me this response:

--------------
As you are aware, the game Grand Theft Auto III was initially classified ‘RC’ (Refused Classification) on 28 November 2001 by the Classification Board.

The game’s Australian distributor, Take 2 Interactive Pty Ltd, applied for a review of the Classification Board’s decision. A three member panel of the Classification Review Board met on 11 December 2001 and decided to confirm the Classification Board’s ‘RC’ decision. The Review Board’s report, which includes the reasons for the ‘RC’ decision, is available on the Office of Film and Literature Classification’s website at: www.oflc.gov.au/Pages/latestnews.html.

The Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995 provides that the highest classification for a computer game is ‘MA15+’. Under current law, games that exceed ‘MA15+’ must be classified ‘RC’ (Refused Classification). Both the Classification Board and the Review Board must apply the Act, the Classification Code (which is a schedule to the Act) and the Classification Guidelines when making decisions.

It is an offence in all States and Territories for an ‘RC’ game to be sold or demonstrated.
The OFLC has issued a press release concerning the legal status of the Grand Theft Auto III which is also available on the OFLC’s website.

As you may be aware, the OFLC is conducting a review of the classification guidelines for films and computer games. Such reviews are undertaken from time to time to ensure that the guidelines continue to reflect current community standards. One of the issues under consideration in the review is whether there should be an adult, ‘R’ rating for computer games. However, even if there was an ‘R’ rating, there can be no certainty that this game would be classified ‘R’. Any proposals for changes to the guidelines require the approval of all Commonwealth, State and Territory Ministers with censorship responsibilities.

Owing to the widely differing views held by people in our community it is not always possible to make decisions that satisfy everyone. However, both the Classification Board and the Review Board take their responsibilities seriously and try to reflect current community standards in their decision-making.

I hope this information is of assistance to you.

---------------

Lets hope they do integrate R18+ into computer games so we never have to face stripped down versions of games again.

Somehow I just cannot see them introducing an R rating anytime in the next year or so. I dunno why... just the crappy censors here, and how some little mommies group will spring up and say that they're too trippin on crack to be watching what their kids buy from the dodgy game dealers down the street...

Oh and just read the reasons for the withdrawl of the game at http://www.oflc.gov.au/PDFs/GTA3_Rev_Dec.pdf. Please note that there are significant references to Doug Perry's review at ps2.ign.com and the gamespot.com reviews. Jesus f*cking christ! Don't base your thoughts on peoples' reviews you dimwits! If so, then read mine:

GTA3 Review (by Chrisg)
This game is nice and happy and not violent in any way (no pimping scuzzy bitches or anything). It's really good.
RATING: *****

According to Hyperactive (at this link), the only thing that is cut from the game is the 7 second period when you 'hire' a prostitute, and then get jiggy with it (7 seconds! sheesh; someone's got a short fuse...). I was expecting hell of a lot more to be cut from the game, and am suprised that this is all they've taken out. And it's also due out on shelves on the 15th Feb, having already made it past the censors.

Still worth up to $200 bucks on ebay? Probably not, but I hope there's at least a change to the box or something that'll make it stand out compared to the uncut one.

(guess we'll still be able to hear about the guy pimpin his scuzzy bitches after all...)

You're not getting off that easy, Chris. I said I wanted the UNcensored version; even if it was only 2 seconds. And I'm sure there are plenty of other anal retentives out there who'd say the same. It's all about freedom; both within the game and in our choice of games.

By the way, how much longer? Finished your copy, but the anticipation's peaking already...again.

Hmmm $200 on ebay for 7 seconds.. I would rather wait for the cut game. pay $75 on sale and buy a porn DVD for $40 as well.. I would still have $85 for some bottles of booze as well..

At this stage I can live without the game thanks....

Hmm 200 hours is a lot.. Hmm Final Fnatasy 7 took about 50, I probably played Duke Nukem 3D for about 100 in total.. Counterstrike at lans would be pushing 100 or so.. The original MGS wa about 30 after replays.. Yep.. 200 hours on Hearts/Solitaire is probably the only one....
BTW just read that Gamecube is May 17 in Australia at $399... Can't even get the same day as Europe

You know Phantom pretty soon you'll get fed up with me reply after you make a swipe at the GameCube (or any console for that matter).

But here we go again....

Nothing inspirational for Gamecube? Obviously not that big a Star Wars fan if SW:RL hasn't grabbed your fancy.
Naturally through there are no original games on the Gamecube, just rehashes... just the oposite to Sony's launch with Tekken Tag, Ridge Racer V etc... (do I even need to put sarcasem tags around that?)

Did PS2 launch here on the same day as europe? I'm not sure but I'd say only a few consoles have done that (wasn't N64 one of them?)

I'll I'm trying to do is open your eyes, your are going to miss some great FUN games with them shut.

AHHHH!!!!!! i hate >HATE< (no offence anyone) the GCN (gamcube) practically its WHOLE lineup is baby games the sw games and Perfect Dark 2 look alright but the rest look really bad, i wouldn't buy a Gamecube till they came down to about $200-$250.
I mean just look LOOK at the damn Xbox and Ps2 titles PS2 - GTA3 (yeah very baby game) MGS2, FFX and heaps of other great titles (would've had more just got no time to think up heaps of games when point already makes itself).
XBOX - Halo, Munch's Oddeysey(varies from person 2 person), LOTR (Lord Of The Rings),
Amped: Freestyle, GTA3 (such a good game thought i should mention it was coming out on both, it also has some really nice looking sw games coming out like "Obi One" and "Starfighter: Special Edition", DF Forever is also coming out on the XBOX (duke Nukem Forever, AI, Max Payne And other great titles, I personally dont see a point in getting a kiddies box when i can wait till it drops in price (will probably take a while) when i can get the PS2 and the XBOX and get heaps of stuff for them.....Mmmmmm UTC, Halo, FFXI Internet play.

Xbox, PS2 GOTTA OWN 'em'ALL C-O-NSOLES

Yes and if you read the review os Star Wars you will know that the game is not the masterpiece we all hoped for with little new over past versions. The difference with the PS2 is the quantities of titles as well. I can still see the GC only getting 5 titles a month at best, with most of those going to be multi-platform anyway. So if I have a PS2 I will get many of the good GC titles, plus the good PS2 titles....

Here is a list of currently released GC games in America (after almost 3 months)

NBA Courtside 2002 Sports Buy 7.5
The Simpsons Road Rage Racing Buy 5.8
Cel Damage Racing Buy 6.3
NFL QB Club 2002 Sports Buy 5.4
Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure Action Buy 3.0
Pikmin Strategy Buy 9.1
Super Smash Bros. Melee Fighting Buy 9.6
SSX Tricky Sports Buy 7.9
FIFA Soccer 2002 Major League Soccer Sports Buy 8.6
XG3 Extreme G Racing Racing Buy 8.5
All-Star Baseball 2002 Sports Buy 6.8
Crazy Taxi Racing Buy 6.9
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 Sports Buy 8.0
NHL Hitz 2002 Sports Buy 7.4
Tarzan Untamed Action 6.3
Batman Vengeance Action Buy 8.1
Luigi's Mansion Adventure Buy 7.0
Madden NFL 2002 Sports Buy 8.7
Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader Action Buy 9.1
Super Monkey Ball Puzzle Buy 8.3
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 Sports Buy 9.1
Wave Race: Blue Storm Racing Buy 9.2

Now of all those games released to date on Gamecube in America (list from IGN), 22 in total, 13 titles are out on PS2 as well, and 2 more are coming soon. So there are 7 original titles for Gamecube.. Cel Damage (which may be coming to PS2), Universal Tour (Complete Crap), Pikmin, Star Wars, Luigi, Wave Race and Super Smash Brothers.

Opposite to sony's launch? Fifa 2k1 was the only other 'rehash'; all the rest were originals. And even though the gamecube may have 20 launch games, they're all gonna be first-gen, and I'd rather wait till later on. Although the ps2 had 7(?) games at launch here, it had 27 in the states - and just because the quantity is up, it don't mean that the quality is...

Look, I'm not baggin the gamecube; I just think people'd be better off waiting until it gets here before they start losing sleep.

And this is a ps2 forum after all - can't exactly expect everyone here to be loving the gamecube...

So much hatred...

Oh and chrisg there were more rehashes, what about Dyn Warriors 2? Sure it didn't have much in common with the first one, but then why did they have to try and sell it off the DW name instead of calling it something else?

Oh and before you counter, yes that was out at launch because cbache bought it at launch.

According to another site, it looks like it is the 20th. Oh well, I've got it so I don't care how long it gets delayed...

Speaking of which, Chris...

Vu was also asking about it again. Looks like he's had a change of heart...again. What a pity if he had to pay a little tax.

GTA3 is on the shelves now. I guess it's worth picking up to play for the next 15 days.

Strange - I got the official playstation.com.au email, and the date they mentioned was the 25th... ...well, I guess that's sony's logic for you ;)

Here's one for you all...

Why are people paying +$120 on ebay.com.au for the new version of gta3???

(come to mention it, people are paying that much for SOE also, even though the end of auction is after the release date...)
