Game worlds are stunningly detailed.
Many people send me e-mail asking which games I consider the most impressive on the Dreamcast, and more often then not the answer I give them is OutTrigger. During my Visit to Ozisoft in July 2000 the Australian Dreamcast Communications Manager, Steve O'Leary, showed me a beta version of OutTrigger that literally blew me away. I never imagined that the Dreamcast could produce a First Person Shooter anywhere near as good as Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena on my PC, but I was wrong. OutTrigger is simply stunning.

Health pick-ups are standard.
The story behind OutTrigger is fairly standard fare. But what do you expect for a first person shooter? In OutTrigger you are a member of Interforce, the International Counter Terrorism Special Forces. You can select one of four characters including Jay, Alain, Lina, and Talon to fight the terrorists and organised crime gangs.

While the single player mode is rather simplistic, in that the tasks are usually along the lines of "kill 20 enemies to proceed", it's the multi-player modes that will generate the most interest. Whether playing the 2 or 4 split-screen or the 4 player Internet mode OutTrigger is perfectly suited to multi-player action. The game seems to run a lot faster then Quake 3 Arena or Unreal Tournament with kills occurring every couple of seconds.

4 player action at its best.
If you've never played a First Person Shooter (FPS) you must be pretty new to the gaming world. The idea behind OutTrigger is simple. Grab a weapon and frag (kill) the opposition before they frag you. The winner is usually determined by the number of kills within a set time limit, or becoming the first person to reach a certain number of frags. Hopefully with all the extra development time (the game was almost arcade perfect in July 2000) AM2 will add in some extra modes such as Capture the Flag, Domination or all new gameplay modes. They have certainly had plenty of time to add them in.

The explosions are simply stunning.
OutTrigger will also be one of the first games to make use of the Dreamcast mouse. This was another item that Ozisoft had for me to use with this game and although it seems rather small, rather like a laptop mini-mouse, you soon adapt to it and it becomes an amazing addition to the game. The Dreamcast controller is used to move your characters around the screen while the mouse is used for targeting the enemies. It may sound awkward but it works remarkably well.

With AM2 developing this title, OutTrigger is destined to be a classic. In fact even in the beta version that I played almost a year ago the game was already better then anything I have seen on the Dreamcast. Unfortunately with the Dreamcast already a dead system here in Australia we will not be getting a local game server. It's only a shame this game didn't come out a year ago when the Dreamcast started struggling. It may have been the game to turn everything around.
